Problem VII.1.1

Let A\mathcal{A} be an algebra that is also a Banach space and such that if a∈Aa \in \mathcal{A}, the maps x↦axx \mapsto ax and x↦xax \mapsto xa of A→A\mathcal{A} \to \mathcal{A} are continuous. Let A1=A×F\mathcal{A}_1 = \mathcal{A} \times \mathbb {F} as in Proposition 1.3. If a∈Aa \in \mathcal{A}, define La:A1→A1L_a: \mathcal{A}_1 \to \mathcal{A}_1 by La(x,ξ)=(ax+ξa,0)L_a(x, \xi ) = (ax + \xi a, 0). Show that La∈B(A1)L_a \in \mathcal{B}(\mathcal{A}_1) and if \vertiiia=∥La∥\vertiii {a} = \left\| L_a\right\|, then \vertiii⋅\vertiii {\cdot } is equivalent to the norm of A\mathcal{A} and A\mathcal{A} with \vertiii⋅\vertiii {\cdot } is a Banach algebra.

Problem VII.1.2

Complete the proof of the following proposition. If A\mathcal{A} is a Banach algebra without an identity, let A1=A×F\mathcal{A}_1 = \mathcal{A} \times \mathbb {F}. Define algebraic operations on A1\mathcal{A}_1 by

(a,α)+(b,β)=(a+b,α+β);β(a,α)=(βa,βα);(a,α)(b,β)=(ab+αb+βa,αβ). \begin{align} (a, \alpha ) + (b, \beta ) & = (a + b, \alpha + \beta ); \\ \beta (a, \alpha ) & = (\beta a, \beta \alpha ); \\ (a, \alpha )(b, \beta ) & = (ab + \alpha b + \beta a, \alpha \beta ). \end{align}

Define ∥(a,α)∥=∥a∥+∣α∣\left\| (a, \alpha )\right\| = \left\| a\right\| + \left|\alpha \right|. Then A1\mathcal{A}_1 with this norm and the algebraic operations defined above is a Banach algebra with identity (0,1)(0, 1) and a↦(a,0)a \mapsto (a, 0) is an isometric isomorphism of A\mathcal{A} into A1\mathcal{A}_1.

If 1≤p≤∞1 \le p \le \infty and kk is a Volterra kernel, define Vk:Lp(0,1)→Lp(0,1)V_k: L^p(0,1) \to L^p(0,1) by

Then Vk∈B(Lp)V_k \in \mathcal{B}(L^p) and ∥Vk∥≤∥k∥∞\left\| V_k\right\| \le \left\| k\right\|_\infty. If k,hk, h are Volterra kernels and (hk)(x,y)=∫01h(x,t)k(t,y) dt(hk)(x, y) = \int_0^1 h(x, t) k(t, y) \, dt, then hkhk is a Volterra kernel, ∥hk∥∞≤∥h∥∞∥k∥∞\left\| hk\right\|_\infty \le \left\| h\right\|_\infty \left\| k\right\|_\infty, and Vhk=VhVkV_{hk} = V_h V_k. If kk is the characteristic function of {(x,y)∈[0,1]×[0,1]:y<x}\left\{ (x,y) \in [0,1] \times [0,1] : y < x\right\}, then VkV_k is the Volterra operator.
