Problem VII.5.1

If KK is a compact subset of C\mathbb {C}, let P(K)P(K) be the closure of the polynomials in C(K)C(K). Show that the identity map on polynomials extends to an isometric isomorphism of P(K)P(K) onto P(K^)P(\hat{K}).

?
Problem VII.5.2

If KK is a compact subset of C\mathbb {C}, let R(K)R(K) be the closure in C(K)C(K) of all rational functions with poles off KK. If f∈R(K)f \in R(K), show that σR(K)(f)=f(K)\sigma_{R(K)}(f) = f(K). If f∈P(K)f \in P(K), show that σP(K)(f)=f^(K^)\sigma_{P(K)}(f) = \hat{f}(\hat{K}), where f^\hat{f} is a natural extension of ff to K^\hat{K}.

Problem VII.5.3

Let A\mathcal{A} and B\mathcal{B} be Banach algebras with a common identity such that B⊆A\mathcal{B} \subseteq \mathcal{A} and a∈Ba \in \mathcal{B}; recall that then σA(a)⊆σB(a)\sigma_{\mathcal{A}}(a) \subseteq \sigma_{\mathcal{B}}(a) and σA(a)\sigma_{\mathcal{A}}(a) and σB(a)\sigma_{\mathcal{B}}(a) have the same polynomially convex hull. If σA(a)⊆R\sigma_{\mathcal{A}}(a) \subseteq \mathbb {R}, show that σB(a)=σA(a)\sigma_{\mathcal{B}}(a) = \sigma_{\mathcal{A}}(a).

?
Problem VII.5.4

Let A\mathcal{A} be a Banach algebra with identity and let a∈Aa \in \mathcal{A}. If G1,G2,…G_1, G_2, \ldots are the holes of σA(a)\sigma_{\mathcal{A}}(a) and 1≤n1≤n2≤⋯1 \le n_1 \le n_2 \le \cdots, show that there is a subalgebra B\mathcal{B} of A\mathcal{A} such that a∈Ba \in \mathcal{B} and σB(a)=σA(a)∪⋃k=1∞Gnk\sigma_{\mathcal{B}}(a) = \sigma_{\mathcal{A}}(a) \cup \bigcup_{k=1}^\infty G_{n_k}.

?
Problem VII.5.5

If A,B\mathcal{A}, \mathcal{B}, and aa are as in Exercise 3 (with A\mathcal{A} not abelian and B\mathcal{B} a maximal abelian subalgebra of A\mathcal{A}), show that σA(a)=σB(a)\sigma_{\mathcal{A}}(a) = \sigma_{\mathcal{B}}(a).

?
Problem VII.5.6
