Problem VII.2.1

Let A\mathcal{A} be a Banach algebra and let L\mathcal{L} be all of the closed left ideals in A\mathcal{A}. If I1,I2∈LI_1, I_2 \in \mathcal{L}, define I1∨I2≡cl(I1+I2)I_1 \vee I_2 \equiv \text{cl}(I_1 + I_2) and I1∧I2=I1∩I2I_1 \wedge I_2 = I_1 \cap I_2. Show that with these definitions L\mathcal{L} is a complete lattice with a largest and a smallest element.

Problem VII.2.2

Let XX be locally compact. For every open subset UU of XX, let I(U)={ϕ∈C0(X):ϕ=0 on X∖U}I(U) = \left\{ \phi \in C_0(X) : \phi = 0 \text{ on } X \setminus U\right\}. Show that U↦I(U)U \mapsto I(U) is a lattice monomorphism of the collection of open subsets of XX into the lattice of closed ideals of C0(X)C_0(X). (It is, in fact, surjective, but the proof of that should wait.)

?
Problem VII.2.3

Let (X,Ω,μ)(X, \Omega , \mu ) be a σ\sigma-finite measure space and let II be an ideal in L∞(X,Ω,μ)L^\infty (X, \Omega , \mu ) that is weak* closed. Show that there is a set Δ\Delta in Ω\Omega such that I={ϕ∈L∞(X,Ω,μ):ϕ=0 a.e. on Δ}I = \left\{ \phi \in L^\infty (X, \Omega , \mu ) : \phi = 0 \text{ a.e. on } \Delta \right\}.

Problem VII.2.4

Let

A={[α0βα]:α,β∈F} \mathcal{A} = \left\{ \begin{bmatrix} \alpha & 0 \\ \beta & \alpha \end{bmatrix} : \alpha , \beta \in \mathbb {F}\right\}

and let

M={[00β0]:β∈F}. \mathcal{M} = \left\{ \begin{bmatrix} 0 & 0 \\ \beta & 0 \end{bmatrix} : \beta \in \mathbb {F}\right\} .

Show that A\mathcal{A} is a Banach algebra and M\mathcal{M} is a maximal ideal in A\mathcal{A}.

?
Problem VII.2.5

Show that for n≥1n \ge 1, Mn(C)M_n(\mathbb {C}) has no nontrivial ideals. How about Mn(R)M_n(\mathbb {R})?

?
Problem VII.2.6

Let A\mathcal{A} be a Banach algebra but do not assume that A\mathcal{A} has an identity. If II is a left ideal of A\mathcal{A}, say that II is a modular left ideal if there is a uu in A\mathcal{A} such that A(1−u)≡{a−au:a∈A}⊆I\mathcal{A}(1 - u) \equiv \left\{ a - au : a \in \mathcal{A}\right\} \subseteq I; call such an element uu of A\mathcal{A} a right modular unit for II. Similarly, define right modular ideals and left modular units. Prove the following.

?
(a)

If uu is a right modular unit for the left ideal II and u∈Iu \in I, then I=AI = \mathcal{A}.

(b)

Maximal modular left ideals are maximal left ideals.

(c)

If II is a proper modular left ideal, then II is contained in a maximal left ideal.

(d)

If II is a proper modular left ideal and uu is a modular right unit for II, then ∥u−x∥≥1\left\| u - x\right\| \ge 1 for all xx in II and cl I\text{cl}\, I is a proper modular left ideal.

(e)

Every maximal modular left ideal of A\mathcal{A} is closed.

Problem VII.2.7

Using the terminology of Exercise 6, let II be an ideal of A\mathcal{A}. Show:

?
(a)

if uu is a right modular unit for II and vv is a left modular unit for II, then u−v∈Iu - v \in I.

(b)

If II is closed, A/I\mathcal{A}/I has an identity if and only if there is a right modular unit and a left modular unit for II. Call an ideal II such that A/I\mathcal{A}/I has an identity a modular ideal. An element uu such that u+Iu + I is an identity for A/I\mathcal{A}/I is called a modular identity for II.

Problem VII.2.8

If A\mathcal{A} is a Banach algebra, a net {ei}\{ e_i\} in A\mathcal{A} is called an approximate identity for A\mathcal{A} if sup⁡i∥ei∥<∞\sup_i \left\| e_i\right\| < \infty and for each aa in A\mathcal{A}, eia→ae_i a \to a and aei→aa e_i \to a. Show that A\mathcal{A} has an approximate identity if and only if there is a bounded subset EE of A\mathcal{A} such that for every ε>0\varepsilon > 0 and for every aa in A\mathcal{A} there is an ee in EE with ∥ae−a∥+∥ea−a∥<ε\left\| ae - a\right\| + \left\| ea - a\right\| < \varepsilon.
