Two well-ordered countable sets are said to be equivalent if there is a monotonic one-to-one correspondence between them. Let M\mathcal{M} be the corresponding set of equivalence classes. Define a partial order relation on M\mathcal{M} by setting μ≥ν\mu \geq \nu if the classes μ\mu and ν\nu have representatives MM and NN such that MM is equivalent to an initial segment of NN (i.e., a set of the form N(n0)={n∈N:n≤n0}N(n_0) = \left\{ n \in N : n \leq n_0\right\}).

Prove that:

?
(a)

M\mathcal{M} contains a smallest element μ0\mu_0;

(b)

any two elements of M\mathcal{M} are comparable;

(c)

M\mathcal{M} is well ordered;

(d)

M\mathcal{M} is uncountable;

(e)

any uncountable set contains a subset of the same cardinality as M\mathcal{M}.

Prove that for any ordinal numbers α\alpha and β\beta, αβ\alpha^{\beta } exists and is unique.

?

Prove that:

?
(a)

if α<β\alpha < \beta and γ>1\gamma > 1, then γα<γβ\gamma^{\alpha } < \gamma^{\beta };

(b)

αβ+γ=αβ⋅αγ\alpha^{\beta +\gamma } = \alpha^{\beta } \cdot \alpha^{\gamma };

(c)

(αβ)γ=αβ⋅γ(\alpha^{\beta })^{\gamma } = \alpha^{\beta \cdot \gamma }.

A set SS is called transitive if the relation

X≤Y⇔(X=Y or X∈Y) X \leq Y \Leftrightarrow (X = Y \text{ or } X \in Y)

well-orders SS, ∅∈S\emptyset \in S, and X∈YX \in Y, Y∈SY \in S imply X∈SX \in S. Prove that for any ordinal number α≥0\alpha \geq 0 there exists a unique transitive set ordered by type α\alpha.
