Let MM be a metric space with metric dd. Let CC be a nonempty closed subset of MM. Define f:M→Rf : M \to \mathbb {R} by

f(x)=inf⁡{d(x,y)∣y∈C}. f(x) = \inf \left\{ d(x,y) \mid y \in C\right\} .

Show that ff is continuous, and that f(x)=0f(x) = 0 if and only if x∈Cx \in C.

Let ( M,dM, d ) be a metric space, let A⊂MA \subset M, and let h(x)=d(x,A)=inf⁡{d(x,a):a∈A}h(x)=d(x, A)= \inf \left\{ d(x, a): a \in A\right\}. Prove that dd is a continuous function on MM.

?

Let ( M,dM, d ) be a metric space and x0∈Mx_{0} \in M. Let f:M→Rf: M \rightarrow \mathbb {R} be defined by f(x)=d(x,x0)f(x)=d\left(x, x_{0}\right). Prove that ff is uniformly continuous.

?

Let zz be a point in the metric space (X,ρX, \rho). Define the function f:X→Rf: X \rightarrow \mathbb {R} by f(x)=ρ(x,z)f(x) = \rho (x, z). Show that ff is uniformly continuous.

For a non-empty subset EE of the metric space (X,ρX, \rho) and a point x∈Xx \in X, define the distance from xx to E,dist⁡E(x)E, \operatorname {dist}_{E}(x), as follows:

dist⁡E(x)=inf⁡{ρ(x,y)∣y∈E}. \operatorname {dist}_{E}(x) = \inf \left\{ \rho (x, y) \mid y \in E\right\} .
?
(i)

Show that ∣dist⁡E(x)−dist⁡E(y)∣≤ρ(x,y)\left|\operatorname {dist}_{E}(x)-\operatorname {dist}_{E}(y)\right| \leq \rho (x, y) for all x,y∈Xx, y \in X.

(ii)

Show that {x∈X∣dist⁡E(x)=0}=Eˉ\left\{ x \in X \mid \operatorname {dist}_{E}(x) = 0\right\} = \bar{E}.

If EE is a nonempty subset of a metric space XX, define the distance from x∈Xx \in X to EE by

ρE(x)=inf⁡z∈Ed(x,z) \rho _{E}(x) = \inf _{z \in E} d(x, z)
?
(a)

Prove that ρE(x)=0\rho_{E}(x) = 0 if and only if x∈Ex \in E.

(b)

Prove that ρE\rho_{E} is a uniformly continuous function on XX, by showing that

∣ρE(x)−ρE(y)∣≤d(x,y) \left|\rho _{E}(x)-\rho _{E}(y)\right| \leq d(x, y)

for all x∈X,y∈Xx \in X, y \in X. Hint: ρE(x)≤d(x,z)≤d(x,y)+d(y,z)\rho_{E}(x) \leq d(x, z) \leq d(x, y)+d(y, z), so that

ρE(x)≤d(x,y)+ρE(y) \rho _{E}(x) \leq d(x, y)+\rho _{E}(y)

(a)

Let χn\chi_{n} be a sequence of type δ\delta, i.e. χn∈Cc∞(Rd)\chi_{n} \in \mathcal{C}_{c}^{\infty }\left(\mathbb {R}^{d}\right), supp⁡χn⊂B(0,1/n),χn⩾0\operatorname {supp} \chi_{n} \subset \mathbb {B}(0,1 / n), \chi_{n} \geqslant 0 and ∫χn(x)dx=1\int \chi_{n}(x) d x = 1. Show that vn:=χn⋆un∈Cc∞(Rd)v_{n}: = \chi_{n} \star u_{n} \in \mathcal{C}_{c}^{\infty }\left(\mathbb {R}^{d}\right) are smooth functions such that lim⁡n→∞vn=  1K\lim_{n \rightarrow \infty } v_{n} = \; \mathbb {1}_{K}.
