Problem 17.9

Let XX and YY be normed linear spaces and T:X→YT: X \rightarrow Y be linear.

?
(i)

Show that TT is continuous if and only if it is continuous at a single point u0u_{0} in XX.

(ii)

Show that TT is Lipschitz if and only if it is continuous.

(iii)

Show that neither (i) nor (ii) hold in the absence of the linearity assumption on TT.

Problem 17.10

For XX and YY normed linear spaces and T∈L(X,Y)T \in \mathcal{L}(X, Y), show that ∥T∥\left\| T\right\| is the smallest Lipschitz constant for the mapping TT, that is, the smallest number c≥0c \geq 0 for which

∥T(u)−T(v)∥≤c⋅∥u−v∥ for all u,v∈X. \left\| T(u)-T(v)\right\| \leq c \cdot \left\| u-v\right\| \text{ for all } u, v \in X .
?
Problem 17.11

For XX and YY normed linear spaces and T∈L(X,Y)T \in \mathcal{L}(X, Y), show that

∥T∥=sup⁡{∥T(u)∥∣u∈X,∥u∥≤1} \left\| T\right\| = \sup \left\{ \left\| T(u)\right\| \mid u \in X,\left\| u\right\| \leq 1\right\}
?
Problem 17.12

For XX and YY normed linear spaces, let {Tn}→T\left\{ T_{n}\right\} \rightarrow T in L(X,Y)\mathcal{L}(X, Y) and {un}→u\left\{ u_{n}\right\} \rightarrow u in XX. Show that {Tn(un)}→T(u)\left\{ T_{n}\left(u_{n}\right)\right\} \rightarrow T(u) in YY.

?
Problem 17.13

Let XX be a Banach space and T∈L(X,X)T \in \mathcal{L}(X, X) have ∥T∥<1\left\| T\right\| < 1.

?
(i)

Use the Contraction Mapping Principle to show that I−T∈L(X,X)I-T \in \mathcal{L}(X, X) is one-to-one and onto.

(ii)

Show that I−TI-T is an isomorphism.

Problem 17.14

Let XX be a Banach space and T∈L(X,X)T \in \mathcal{L}(X, X) have ∥T∥<1\left\| T\right\| < 1. Define T0=IdT^{0} = \mathrm{Id}.

?
(i)

Use the completeness of L(X,X)\mathcal{L}(X, X) to show that ∑n=0∞Tn\sum_{n = 0}^{\infty } T^{n} converges in L(X,X)\mathcal{L}(X, X).

(ii)

Show that (I−T)−1=∑n=0∞Tn(I-T)^{-1} = \sum_{n = 0}^{\infty } T^{n}.

Problem 17.15

For XX and YY normed linear spaces and T∈L(X,Y)T \in \mathcal{L}(X, Y), show that TT is an isomorphism if and only if there is an operator S∈L(Y,X)S \in \mathcal{L}(Y, X) such that for each u∈Xu \in X and v∈Yv \in Y,

S(T(u))=u and T(S(v))=v. S(T(u)) = u \text{ and } T(S(v)) = v .
?
Problem 17.16

For XX and YY normed linear spaces and T∈L(X,Y)T \in \mathcal{L}(X, Y), show that ker⁡T\operatorname {ker} T is a closed subspace of XX and that TT is one-to-one if and only if ker⁡T={0}\operatorname {ker} T = \left\{ 0\right\}.

?
Problem 17.17

Let (X,ρX, \rho) be a metric space containing the point x0x_{0}. Define Lip⁡0(X)\operatorname {Lip}_{0}(X) to be the set of realvalued Lipschitz functions ff on XX that vanish at x0x_{0}. Show that Lip⁡0(X)\operatorname {Lip}_{0}(X) is a linear space that is normed by defining, for f∈Lip⁡0(X)f \in \operatorname {Lip}_{0}(X),

∥f∥=sup⁡x≠y∣f(x)−f(y)∣ρ(x,y) \left\| f\right\| = \sup _{x \neq y} \frac{\left|f(x)-f(y)\right|}{\rho (x, y)}

Show that Lip⁡0(X)\operatorname {Lip}_{0}(X) is a Banach space. For each x∈Xx \in X, define the linear functional FxF_{x} on Lip⁡0(X)\operatorname {Lip}_{0}(X) by setting Fx(f)=f(x)F_{x}(f) = f(x). Show that FxF_{x} belongs to L(Lip⁡0(X),R)\mathcal{L}\left(\operatorname {Lip}_{0}(X), \mathbb {R}\right) and that for x,y∈X,∥Fx−Fy∥=ρ(x,y)x, y \in X,\left\| F_{x}-F_{y}\right\| = \rho (x, y). Thus, XX is isometric to a subset of the Banach space L(Lip⁡0(X),R)\mathcal{L}\left(\operatorname {Lip}_{0}(X), \mathbb {R}\right). Since any closed subset of a complete metric space is complete, this provides another proof of the existence of a completion for any metric space XX. It also shows that any metric space is isometric to a subset of a normed linear space.

?
Problem 17.18

Use the preceding problem to show that every normed linear space is a dense subspace of a Banach space.

?
Problem 17.19

For XX a normed linear space and T,S∈L(X,X)T, S \in \mathcal{L}(X, X), show that the composition S∘TS \circ T also belongs to L(X,X)\mathcal{L}(X, X) and ∥S∘T∥≤∥S∥⋅∥T∥\left\| S \circ T\right\| \leq \left\| S\right\| \cdot \left\| T\right\|.

?
Problem 17.20

Let XX be a normed linear space and YY a closed linear subspace of XX. Show that ∥x∥1=inf⁡y∈Y∥x−y∥\left\| x\right\|_{1} = \inf_{y \in Y}\left\| x-y\right\| defines a pseudonorm on XX. The normed linear space induced by the pseudonorm ∥⋅∥1\left\| \cdot \right\|_{1} (see Problem 8) is denoted by X/YX / Y and called the quotient space of XX modulo YY. Show that the natural map φ\varphi of XX onto X/YX / Y takes open sets into open sets.

?
Problem 17.21

Show that if XX is a Banach space and YY a closed linear proper subspace of XX, then the quotient X/YX / Y also is a Banach space and the natural map φ:X→X/Y\varphi : X \rightarrow X / Y has norm 1.

?
Problem 17.22

Let XX and YY be normed linear spaces, T∈L(X,Y)T \in \mathcal{L}(X, Y) and ker T=ZT = Z. Show that there is a unique bounded linear operator SS from X/ZX / Z into YY such that T=S∘φT = S \circ \varphi where φ:X→X/Z\varphi : X \rightarrow X / Z is the natural map. Moreover, show that ∥T∥=∥S∥\left\| T\right\| = \left\| S\right\|.
