Problem 2.1.1
?
(a)

Verify that g:(−1,1)→Rg: (-1,1) \to \mathbb {R}, g(x)=x/(1−x2)g(x) = x/(1-x^2), is a homeomorphism and that it restricts to a homeomorphism of [0,1)[0,1) onto [0,∞)[0,\infty ).

(b)

Construct a homeomorphism of B(y,r)B(y,r) onto B(0,1)B(0,1), where y,0∈Rny, 0 \in \mathbb {R}^{n}, r>0r > 0.

(c)

Construct a homeomorphism from k:B(0,1)→Rnk: B(0,1) \to \mathbb {R}^{n}. (Hint: Use the analog of (a).)

Problem 2.1.2

Let Hn={(x1,…,xn)∈Rn:xn≥0}H^{n} = \left\{ (x_{1}, \ldots , x_{n}) \in \mathbb {R}^{n} : x_{n} \geq 0\right\} and ∂Hn={(x1,…,xn)∈Rn:xn=0}\partial H^{n} = \left\{ (x_{1}, \ldots , x_{n}) \in \mathbb {R}^{n} : x_{n} = 0\right\}. An nn-manifold with boundary is a topological space MM such that:

  1. there is an embedding of MM into RN\mathbb {R}^{N} for some NN;

  2. given x∈Mx \in M, there is a neighborhood UU of xx and a homeomorphism hh of UU onto an open set in HnH^{n}.

Show that if h:U→Hnh: U \to H^{n} is a homeomorphism onto an open set in HnH^{n} and h(x)∈∂Hnh(x) \in \partial H^{n}, then there is a smaller open set VV about xx and a homeomorphism h′:V→Hnh': V \to H^{n}.

?
Problem 2.1.3

In a manifold with boundary, a point xx with h(x)∈Rn∖∂Hnh(x) \in \mathbb {R}^{n} \setminus \partial H^{n} (i.e.h(x)h(x) in the interior of HnH^{n}) is called an interior point, and a point with h(x)∈∂Hnh(x) \in \partial H^{n} is called a boundary point. Assume the following two results (to be proved in Chapter 6 using homology theory): first, an open set in Rn\mathbb {R}^{n} is not homeomorphic to an open set in Rm\mathbb {R}^{m} for m≠nm \neq n; second, if x∈∂Hnx \in \partial H^{n} and UU is an open set in HnH^{n} about xx, then UU is not homeomorphic to an open set in Rn\mathbb {R}^{n} (or even any Rm\mathbb {R}^{m}).

Using these two results, show that the dimension of a manifold is well defined and that an interior point cannot be a boundary point as well, so the concepts of interior point and boundary point are well defined.

?
Problem 2.1.4

Suppose UU is an open set about 0∈[0,∞)=H10 \in [0,\infty ) = H^{1} and VV is an open set in R\mathbb {R}. Show that UU is not homeomorphic to VV.

?
Remark.
?

Note that there is an interval [0,c)[0,c) contained in UU which is path connected after 00 is removed.

Problem 2.1.5

Show that the boundary of an nn-manifold is either empty or an (n−1)(n-1)-manifold.

?
Remark.
?

Use the fact that a point is either an interior point or a boundary point but not both.

Problem 2.1.6

Suppose M,NM, N are nn-manifolds with boundary. Show that if h:M→Nh: M \to N is a homeomorphism, then h∣∂Mh|_{\partial M} is a homeomorphism from ∂M\partial M to ∂N\partial N.

?
Problem 2.1.7

Theorem (Invariance of domain): Suppose UU is an open subset of Rn\mathbb {R}^{n} and f:U→Rnf: U \to \mathbb {R}^{n} is 11--11 and continuous. Then ff is an open map; that is, it maps open sets to open sets.

Apply this theorem to prove the following version for nn-manifolds: if Mn,NnM^{n}, N^{n} are nn-manifolds and f:Mn→Nnf: M^{n} \to N^{n} is 11--11 and continuous, then ff is an open map. Show that if we also assume that MnM^{n} is compact, connected and NnN^{n} is connected, then ff must be a homeomorphism.

?
Problem 2.1.8

Deduce the fact that the dimension of an nn-manifold is well defined from the invariance of domain.

?
Problem 2.1.9

Prove that the invariance of domain holds when n=1n = 1.

?
Problem 2.1.10

Show directly that H+2={(x1,x2):x1≥0,x2≥0}H^{2}_{+} = \left\{ (x_{1}, x_{2}) : x_{1} \geq 0, x_{2} \geq 0\right\} is homeomorphic to H2H^{2}.

?
Remark.
?

Use polar coordinates to define the map.

Problem 2.1.11

Show that the product of an mm-manifold MM and nn-manifold NN is an (m+n)(m+n)-manifold M×NM \times N. Conclude that T=S1×S1T = S^{1} \times S^{1} (the torus) is a compact, connected surface.

?
Problem 2.1.12

Construct a homeomorphism between the quotient space D11∪idD21D_{1}^{1} \cup_{\mathrm{id}} D_{2}^{1} and the circle S1S^{1}, where Di1D_{i}^{1} denotes a copy of the interval [−1,1][-1,1] and the identification glues corresponding endpoints of the two copies together via the identity.
