Theorem 9.7.4 states: assume that hh is a convex function from R\mathbb {R} to R\mathbb {R}, that {Zn;n≥1}\left\{ Z_{n}; n \geq 1\right\} is a martingale, and that E[∣h(Zn)∣]<∞\mathbb {E}\left[\left|h(Z_{n})\right|\right] < \infty for all nn. Then {h(Zn);n≥1}\left\{ h(Z_{n}); n \geq 1\right\} is a submartingale.

Show that Theorem 9.7.4 is also valid for martingales relative to a joint process. That is, show that if hh is a convex function of a real variable and if {Zn;n≥1}\left\{ Z_{n}; n \geq 1\right\} is a martingale relative to a joint process {Zn,Xn;n≥1}\left\{ Z_{n}, X_{n}; n \geq 1\right\}, then {h(Zn);n≥1}\left\{ h(Z_{n}); n \geq 1\right\} is a submartingale relative to {h(Zn),Xn;n≥1}\left\{ h(Z_{n}), X_{n}; n \geq 1\right\}.

Let YY be a martingale and let uu be a convex function mapping R\mathbb {R} to R\mathbb {R}. Show that {u(Yn):n≥0}\left\{ u\left(Y_{n}\right): n \geq 0\right\} is a submartingale provided that E[u(Yn)+]<∞\mathbb {E}\left[u\left(Y_{n}\right)^{+}\right] < \infty for all nn.

Show that ∣Yn∣,Yn2\left|Y_{n}\right|, Y_{n}^{2}, and Yn+Y_{n}^{+}constitute submartingales whenever the appropriate moment conditions are satisfied.

Let YY be a submartingale and let uu be a convex non-decreasing function mapping R\mathbb {R} to R\mathbb {R}. Show that {u(Yn):n≥0}\left\{ u\left(Y_{n}\right): n \geq 0\right\} is a submartingale provided that E[u(Yn)+]<∞\mathbb {E}\left[u\left(Y_{n}\right)^{+}\right] < \infty for all nn.

Show that (subject to a moment condition) Yn+Y_{n}^{+}constitutes a submartingale, but that ∣Yn∣\left|Y_{n}\right| and Yn2Y_{n}^{2} need not constitute submartingales.

Let {ξn}\left\{ \xi_{n}\right\} be a martingale, E[ξn2]<∞\mathbb {E}\left[\xi_{n}^{2}\right] < \infty. Prove that {ξn2}\left\{ \xi_{n}^{2}\right\} is a submartingale.

Let {Xn,Fn}\left\{ X_{n}, \mathscr {F}_{n}\right\} be a martingale, and g(x)g(x) a convex function such that E[∣g(Xn)∣]<∞,n=0,1,…\mathbb {E}\left[\left|g\left(X_{n}\right)\right|\right] < \infty , n = 0,1, \ldots Prove that the sequence {g(Xn),Fn}\left\{ g\left(X_{n}\right), \mathscr {F}_{n}\right\} forms a submartingale.
