Suppose F1,…,FnF_{1}, \ldots , F_{n} are disjoint closed subsets of R\mathbb {R}. Prove that if

g:F1∪⋯∪Fn→R g: F_{1} \cup \cdots \cup F_{n} \rightarrow \mathbb {R}

is a function such that g∣Fk\left.g\right|_{F_{k}} is a continuous function for each k∈{1,…,n}k \in \left\{ 1, \ldots , n\right\}, then gg is a continuous function.

Let AA and BB be measurable sets. Is f:A∪B→Rf: A \cup B \rightarrow \mathbb {R} continuous if and only if its restrictions to AA and BB are continuous?

Let XX and YY be topological spaces and consider a mapping ff from XX to YY. Suppose X=X1∪X2X = X_{1} \cup X_{2} and the restrictions of ff to the topological subspaces X1X_{1} and to X2X_{2} are continuous. Show that ff need not be continuous at any point in XX. Show that ff is continuous on XX if X1X_{1} and X2X_{2} are open. Compare this with the case of measurable functions and the inheritance of measurability from the measurability of restrictions.
