A trigonometric polynomial is a function pp on R\mathbb {R} of the form

p(θ)=∑n=−NNcneinθ, p(\theta ) = \sum _{n=-N}^{N} c_n e^{in\theta },

for some cn∈Cc_n \in \mathbb {C}, N≥0N \geq 0. Suppose ff is continuous and 2π2\pi-periodic on R\mathbb {R}, and let

an=∫−ππf(θ)e−inθ dθ. a_n = \int _{-\pi }^{\pi } f(\theta ) e^{-in\theta } \, d\theta .

Show that for every ε>0\varepsilon > 0, there exists a trigonometric polynomial

p(θ)=∑n=−NNcneinθ p(\theta ) = \sum _{n=-N}^{N} c_n e^{in\theta }

such that

∥f−p∥∞<ε \left\| f-p\right\| _{\infty } < \varepsilon

and

∣cn∣≤∣an∣for all n. \left|c_n\right| \leq \left|a_n\right| \qquad \text{for all } n.

Prove that the space of trigonometric polynomials is dense in E(T)\mathcal{E}(\mathrm{T}).

?

Every continuous function that is periodic with period 2π2\pi can be uniformly approximated by trigonometric polynomials (see §2 of Chapter 1, Part VI) to any assigned degree of accuracy. (Weierstrass' approximation theorem.)

?

Let ff be a continuous real-valued function on R\mathbb {R} that is periodic with period 2π2 \pi. For ϵ>0\epsilon > 0, show that there are real numbers, c0,a1,…,an,b1,…,bnc_{0}, a_{1}, \ldots , a_{n}, b_{1}, \ldots , b_{n}, such that

∣f(x)−c0−∑k=1n[akcos⁡kx+bksin⁡kx]∣<ϵ for all x∈R. \left|f(x)-c_{0}-\sum _{k = 1}^{n}\left[a_{k} \cos k x+b_{k} \sin k x\right]\right| < \epsilon \text{ for all } x \in \mathbb {R} .
