Let XX be a Banach space, A∈L(X)A \in \mathcal{L}(X). Prove that

?
(1)

σ(A′)=σ(A)\sigma \left(A^{\prime }\right) = \sigma (A);

(2)

σr(A)⊂σp(A′)\sigma_{r}(A) \subset \sigma_{p}\left(A^{\prime }\right);

(3)

σp(A)⊂(σp(A′)∪σr(A′))\sigma_{p}(A) \subset \left(\sigma_{p}\left(A^{\prime }\right) \cup \sigma_{r}\left(A^{\prime }\right)\right);

(4)

σp(A′)⊂(σp(A)∪σr(A))\sigma_{p}\left(A^{\prime }\right) \subset \left(\sigma_{p}(A) \cup \sigma_{r}(A)\right).

Remark.
?

The inclusion σr(A′)⊂σp(A)\sigma_{r}\left(A^{\prime }\right) \subset \sigma_{p}(A) is not always true, see problem 11.28, item (2).

(R. S. Phillips, 1955). Let XX be a Banach space, A∈B(X)A \in \mathcal{B}(X). Prove that σ(A)=σ(A′)\sigma (A) = \sigma \left(A^{\prime }\right).

?

Let XX be a Banach space, A∈B(X)A \in \mathcal{B}(X). Prove that if λ∈σr(A)\lambda \in \sigma_{\mathrm{r}}(A), then λ∈σp(A′)\lambda \in \sigma_{\mathrm{p}}\left(A^{\prime }\right); if λ∈σp(A)\lambda \in \sigma_{\mathrm{p}}(A), then λ∈σp(A′)∪σr(A′)\lambda \in \sigma_{\mathrm{p}}\left(A^{\prime }\right) \cup \sigma_{\mathrm{r}}\left(A^{\prime }\right); if λ∈σc(A)\lambda \in \sigma_{\mathrm{c}}(A), then λ∈σc(A′)∪σr(A′)\lambda \in \sigma_{\mathrm{c}}\left(A^{\prime }\right) \cup \sigma_{\mathrm{r}}\left(A^{\prime }\right).

?

Let XX be a reflexive Banach space, A∈B(X)A \in \mathcal{B}(X). Prove that σc(A)=σc(A′),σr(A′)⊂σp(A)\sigma_{\mathrm{c}}(A) = \sigma_{\mathrm{c}}\left(A^{\prime }\right), \sigma_{\mathrm{r}}\left(A^{\prime }\right) \subset \sigma_{\mathrm{p}}(A).

?

Prove the following proposition.

?
(a)

If X\mathcal{X} is a Banach space and A∈B(X)A \in \mathcal{B}(\mathcal{X}), then σ(A∗)=σ(A)\sigma (A^*) = \sigma (A).

(b)

If H\mathcal{H} is a Hilbert space and A∈B(H)A \in \mathcal{B}(\mathcal{H}), then σ(A∗)=σ(A)∗\sigma (A^*) = \sigma (A)^*, where for any subset Δ\Delta of C\mathbb {C}, Δ∗≡{zˉ:z∈Δ}\Delta^* \equiv \left\{ \bar{z} : z \in \Delta \right\}.

Show that for X\mathcal{X} a Banach space and AA in B(X)\mathcal{B}(\mathcal{X}), σl(A)=σr(A∗)\sigma_l(A) = \sigma_r(A^*), where σl\sigma_l and σr\sigma_r denote the left and right spectra of AA. What happens in a Hilbert space?
