Prove Proposition 9.3:

?
(a)

If (X,≤)(\mathcal{X}, \leq ) is an ordered vector space and P={x∈X:x≥0}P = \left\{ x \in \mathcal{X} : x \geq 0\right\}, then PP is a wedge.

(b)

If PP is a wedge in the real vector space X\mathcal{X} and ≤\leq is defined on X\mathcal{X} by declaring x≤yx \leq y if and only if y−x∈Py - x \in P, then (X,≤)(\mathcal{X}, \leq ) is an ordered vector space.

Prove Proposition 9.4: if (X,≤)(\mathcal{X}, \leq ) is an ordered vector space and PP is the wedge of positive elements, ≤\leq is antisymmetric if and only if P∩(−P)=(0)P \cap (-P) = (0).

?

Show that ee is an order unit for (X,≤)(\mathcal{X}, \leq ) if and only if for every xx in X\mathcal{X} there is a δ>0\delta > 0 such that e±tx≥0e \pm tx \geq 0 for 0≤t≤δ0 \leq t \leq \delta.

?

Show that C(R)C(\mathbb {R}), the space of all continuous real-valued functions on R\mathbb {R}, has no order unit.

?

Prove (9.11): with (X,≤)(\mathcal{X}, \leq ) an ordered vector space, Y\mathcal{Y} a linear manifold in X\mathcal{X} that is cofinal, f:Y→Rf : \mathcal{Y} \to \mathbb {R} a positive linear functional, and, for xx in X\mathcal{X},

q(x)=inf⁡{f(y):y∈Y and y≥x}, q(x) = \inf \left\{ f(y) : y \in \mathcal{Y} \text{ and } y \geq x\right\} ,

the function qq is a sublinear functional on X\mathcal{X}.

Characterize the order units of Cb(X)C_b(X). Does Cb(X)C_b(X) always have an order unit?

?

Characterize the order units of C0(X)C_0(X) if XX is locally compact. Does C0(X)C_0(X) always have an order unit?

Let X=M2(R)\mathcal{X} = M_2(\mathbb {R}), the 2×22 \times 2 matrices over R\mathbb {R}. Define AA in M2(R)M_2(\mathbb {R}) to be positive if A=A∗A = A^* and ⟨Ax,x⟩≥0\left\langle Ax, x \right\rangle \geq 0 for all xx in R2\mathbb {R}^2. Characterize the order units of M2(R)M_2(\mathbb {R}).

?

If 1≤p<∞1 \leq p < \infty and X=Lp(0,1)\mathcal{X} = L^p(0,1), define f≤gf \leq g to mean that f(x)≤g(x)f(x) \leq g(x) a.e. Show that X\mathcal{X} is an ordered vector space that has no order unit.

Suppose that Rn\mathbb {R}^{n} is totally ordered in such a way that

  1. x1≥y1x_1 \geq y_1 and x2≥y2⇒x1+x2≥y1+y2x_2 \geq y_2 \Rightarrow x_1+x_2 \geq y_1+y_2;

  2. x≥yx \geq y and λ≥0\lambda \geq 0 implies that λx≥λy\lambda x \geq \lambda y for λ∈R\lambda \in \mathbb {R};

  3. x≥yx \geq y and y≥xy \geq x implies that x=yx = y. Prove that Rn\mathbb {R}^{n} is isomorphic (as a totally ordered space) to the product of nn lines (with the usual order), endowed with the lexicographical order (see Problem 8).
