Prove Lindelöf's theorem: if ∣f(z)∣⩽C\left|f(z)\right| \leqslant C on the edges of the region −a<x<a-a < x < a, and inside this region ∣f(z)∣<eλ∣y∣\left|f(z)\right| < e^{\lambda \left|y\right|}, where λ\lambda is some constant, then also inside the region ∣f(z)∣⩽C\left|f(z)\right| \leqslant C, and moreover equality at an interior point is possible only when f(z)≡Cf(z) \equiv C.

Hint. It is useful to study the function f(z)eεz2f(z)e^{\varepsilon z^{2}} for ε>0\varepsilon > 0.

The function f(z)f(z) is assumed to be regular in the half-plane Re(z)≥0\mathrm{Re}\left(z\right)\geq 0 and to satisfy the following conditions:

  1. there exist two constants AA and BB, A>0A>0, B>0B>0 such that in the entire half-plane

    ∣f(z)∣≤AeB∣z∣; \left|f(z)\right| \leq Ae^{B\left|z\right|};
  2. we have for r≥0r\geq 0

    ∣f(ir)∣≤1,∣f(−ir)∣≤1; \left|f(ir)\right| \leq 1, \quad \left|f(-ir)\right| \leq 1;

\limsup _{r\to +\infty } \frac{\log \left|f(r)\right|}{r} \leq 0.

Then $f(z)$ is bounded by $1$ in the entire half-plane:

\left|f(z)\right| \leq 1 \quad \text{for} \quad \mathrm{Re}\left(z\right)\geq 0.

  1. there exist two constants AA and BB, A>0A>0, B>0B>0, such that in the entire half-plane

    ∣f(z)∣<AeB∣z∣; \left|f(z)\right| < Ae^{B\left|z\right|};
  2. f(z)f(z) is bounded on the imaginary axis,

    ∣f(ir)∣≤1,∣f(−ir)∣≤1,r≥0; \left|f(ir)\right| \leq 1, \quad \left|f(-ir)\right| \leq 1, \quad r\geq 0;
  3. there exists an angle α\alpha, −π2<α<π2-\dfrac {\pi }{2}<\alpha <\dfrac {\pi }{2} such that

    lim⁡r→+∞log⁡∣f(reiα)∣r=−∞. \lim _{r\to +\infty } \frac{\log \left|f(re^{i\alpha })\right|}{r} = -\infty .

Such a function must vanish identically. [Examine the function eωzf(z)e^{\omega z}f(z), ω>0\omega >0.]

Suppose that the function f(z)f(z) is not a constant and that it is regular in the half-strip G\mathfrak {G} defined by the inequalities

x≥0,−π2≤y≤π2,z=x+iy. x\geq 0, \quad -\frac{\pi }{2}\leq y\leq \frac{\pi }{2}, \quad z=x+iy.

If there exist two constants AA and aa, A>0A>0, 0<a<10<a<1, such that in G\mathfrak {G}

∣f(x+iy)∣<eAeax, \left|f(x+iy)\right| < e^{Ae^{ax}},

and if

∣f(z)∣≤1 \left|f(z)\right| \leq 1

on the boundary of G\mathfrak {G} (i.e.for x=0x=0, −π2≤y≤π2-\dfrac {\pi }{2}\leq y\leq \dfrac {\pi }{2} and for x≥0x\geq 0, y=±π2y=\pm \dfrac {\pi }{2}) then f(z)f(z) satisfies the strict inequality

∣f(z)∣<1 \left|f(z)\right| < 1

in the interior of G\mathfrak {G}. [The comparison function is of the type eebze^{e^{bz}}.]

Let ω(x)\omega (x) have the same properties as in problem 329. Every function f(z)f(z) that is regular in the half-strip

x≥0,−π2≤y≤π2,z=x+iy x\geq 0, \quad -\frac{\pi }{2}\leq y\leq \frac{\pi }{2}, \quad z=x+iy

must satisfy the inequality

∣f(x+iy)∣<eω(x)ex \left|f(x+iy)\right| < e^{\omega (x)e^{x}}

at least at one point z=x+iyz=x+iy of the half-strip.

Let Π\Pi be the open right half plane. Suppose that f∈H(Π)f \in H(\Pi ), that ∣f(z)∣<1\left|f(z)\right| < 1 for all z∈Πz \in \Pi, and that there exists α,−π/2<α<π/2\alpha ,-\pi / 2 < \alpha < \pi / 2, such that

log⁡∣f(reiα)∣r→−∞ as r→∞ \frac{\log \left|f\left(r e^{i \alpha }\right)\right|}{r} \rightarrow -\infty \quad \text{ as } \quad r \rightarrow \infty

Prove that f=0f = 0. Hint: Put gn(z)=f(z)enz,n=1,2,3,…g_{n}(z) = f(z) e^{n z}, n = 1,2,3, \ldots. Apply Exercise 9 to the two angular regions defined by −π/2<θ<α,α<θ<π/2-\pi / 2 < \theta < \alpha , \alpha < \theta < \pi / 2. Conclude that each gng_{n} is bounded in Π\Pi, and hence that ∣gn∣<1\left|g_{n}\right| < 1 in Π\Pi, for all nn.

Suppose Γ\Gamma is the boundary of an unbounded region Ω,f∈H(Ω),f\Omega , f \in H(\Omega ), f is continuous on Ω∪Γ\Omega \cup \Gamma, and there are constants B<∞B < \infty and M<∞M < \infty such that ∣f∣≤M\left|f\right| \leq M on Γ\Gamma and ∣f∣≤B\left|f\right| \leq B in Ω\Omega. Prove that we then actually have ∣f∣≤M\left|f\right| \leq M in Ω\Omega.

Suggestion: Show that it involves no loss of generality to assume that U∩Ω=∅U \cap \Omega = \varnothing. Fix z0∈Ωz_{0} \in \Omega, let nn be a large integer, let VV be a large disc with center at 0, and apply the maximum modulus theorem to the function fn(z)/zf^{n}(z) / z in the component of V∩ΩV \cap \Omega which contains z0z_{0}.
