Problem 2.12.2

Suppose f∈H(II+)f \in H\left(\mathrm{II}^{+}\right), where II+\mathrm{II}^{+}is the upper half plane, and ∣f∣≤1\left|f\right| \leq 1. How large can ∣f′(i)∣\left|f^{\prime }(i)\right| be? Find the extremal functions. (Compare the discussion in Sec. 12.5).

?
Problem 2.12.3

Suppose f∈H(Ω)f \in H(\Omega ). Under what conditions can ∣f∣\left|f\right| have a local minimum in Ω\Omega?

?
Problem 2.12.4
?
(a)

Suppose Ω\Omega is a region, DD is a disc, Dˉ⊂Ω,f∈H(Ω),f\bar{D} \subset \Omega , f \in H(\Omega ), f is not constant, and ∣f∣\left|f\right| is constant on the boundary of DD. Prove that ff has at least one zero in DD.

(b)

Find all entire functions ff such that ∣f(z)∣=1\left|f(z)\right| = 1 whenever ∣z∣=1\left|z\right| = 1.

Problem 2.12.5

Suppose Ω\Omega is a bounded region, {fm}\left\{ f_{m}\right\} is a sequence of continuous functions on Ωˉ\bar{\Omega } which are holomorphic in Ω\Omega, and {fn}\left\{ f_{n}\right\} converges uniformly on the boundary of Ω\Omega. Prove that {fn}\left\{ f_{n}\right\} converges uniformly on Ωˉ\bar{\Omega }.

?
Problem 2.12.6

Suppose f∈H(Ω)f \in H(\Omega ), Γ\Gamma is a cycle in Ω\Omega such that Ind⁡Γ(α)=0\operatorname {Ind}_{\Gamma }(\alpha ) = 0 for all α∉Ω,∣f(ζ)∣≤1\alpha \notin \Omega ,\left|f(\zeta )\right| \leq 1 for every ζ∈Γ∗\zeta \in \Gamma^{*}, and Ind⁡Γ(z)≠0\operatorname {Ind}_{\Gamma }(z) \neq 0. Prove that ∣f(z)∣≤1\left|f(z)\right| \leq 1.

?
Problem 2.12.7

In the proof of Theorem 12.8 it was tacitly assumed that M(a)>0M(a) > 0 and M(b)>0M(b) > 0. Show that the theorem is true if M(a)=0M(a) = 0, and that then f(z)=0f(z) = 0 for all z∈Ωz \in \Omega.

?
Problem 2.12.8

If 0<R1<R2<∞0 < R_{1} < R_{2} < \infty, let A(R1,R2)A\left(R_{1}, R_{2}\right) denote the annulus

{z:R1<∣z∣<R2} \left\{ z: R_{1} < \left|z\right| < R_{2}\right\}

There is a vertical strip which the exponential function maps onto A(R1,R2)A\left(R_{1}, R_{2}\right). Use this to prove Hadamard's three-circle theorem: If f∈H(A(R1,R2))f \in H\left(A\left(R_{1}, R_{2}\right)\right), if

M(r)=max⁡θ∣f(reiθ)∣(R1<r<R2) M(r) = \max _{\theta }\left|f\left(r e^{i \theta }\right)\right| \quad \left(R_{1} < r < R_{2}\right)

and if R1<a<r<b<R2R_{1} < a < r < b < R_{2}, then

log⁡M(r)≤log⁡(b/r)log⁡(b/a)log⁡M(a)+log⁡(r/a)log⁡(b/a)log⁡M(b) \log M(r) \leq \frac{\log (b / r)}{\log (b / a)} \log M(a)+\frac{\log (r / a)}{\log (b / a)} \log M(b)

For which ff does equality hold in this inequality?

?
Remark.
?

In other words, log⁡M(r)\log M(r) is a convex function of log⁡r\log r.

Problem 2.12.9

Let Π\Pi be the open right half plane (z∈Π(z \in \Pi if and only if Re(z)>0)\mathrm{Re}\left(z\right) > 0). Suppose ff is continuous on the closure of Π(Re(z)≥0),f∈H(Π)\Pi (\mathrm{Re}\left(z\right) \geq 0), f \in H(\Pi ), and there are constants A<∞A < \infty and α<1\alpha < 1 such that

∣f(z)∣<Aexp⁡(∣z∣α) \left|f(z)\right| < A \exp \left(\left|z\right|^{\alpha }\right)

for all z∈Πz \in \Pi. Furthermore, ∣f(iy)∣≤1\left|f(i y)\right| \leq 1 for all real yy. Prove that ∣f(z)∣≤1\left|f(z)\right| \leq 1 in Π\Pi. Show that the conclusion is false for α=1\alpha = 1. How does the result have to be modified if Π\Pi is replaced by a region bounded by two rays through the origin, at an angle not equal to π\pi?

?
Problem 2.12.10

Let Π\Pi be the open right half plane. Suppose that f∈H(Π)f \in H(\Pi ), that ∣f(z)∣<1\left|f(z)\right| < 1 for all z∈Πz \in \Pi, and that there exists α,−π/2<α<π/2\alpha ,-\pi / 2 < \alpha < \pi / 2, such that

log⁡∣f(reiα)∣r→−∞ as r→∞ \frac{\log \left|f\left(r e^{i \alpha }\right)\right|}{r} \rightarrow -\infty \quad \text{ as } \quad r \rightarrow \infty

Prove that f=0f = 0. Hint: Put gn(z)=f(z)enz,n=1,2,3,…g_{n}(z) = f(z) e^{n z}, n = 1,2,3, \ldots. Apply Exercise 9 to the two angular regions defined by −π/2<θ<α,α<θ<π/2-\pi / 2 < \theta < \alpha , \alpha < \theta < \pi / 2. Conclude that each gng_{n} is bounded in Π\Pi, and hence that ∣gn∣<1\left|g_{n}\right| < 1 in Π\Pi, for all nn.

?
Problem 2.12.11

Suppose Γ\Gamma is the boundary of an unbounded region Ω,f∈H(Ω),f\Omega , f \in H(\Omega ), f is continuous on Ω∪Γ\Omega \cup \Gamma, and there are constants B<∞B < \infty and M<∞M < \infty such that ∣f∣≤M\left|f\right| \leq M on Γ\Gamma and ∣f∣≤B\left|f\right| \leq B in Ω\Omega. Prove that we then actually have ∣f∣≤M\left|f\right| \leq M in Ω\Omega.

Suggestion: Show that it involves no loss of generality to assume that U∩Ω=∅U \cap \Omega = \varnothing. Fix z0∈Ωz_{0} \in \Omega, let nn be a large integer, let VV be a large disc with center at 0, and apply the maximum modulus theorem to the function fn(z)/zf^{n}(z) / z in the component of V∩ΩV \cap \Omega which contains z0z_{0}.

?
Problem 2.12.12

Let ff be an entire function. If there is a continuous mapping γ\gamma of [0,1)[0,1) into the complex plane such that γ(t)→∞\gamma (t) \rightarrow \infty and f(γ(t))→αf(\gamma (t)) \rightarrow \alpha as t→1t \rightarrow 1, we say that α\alpha is an asymptotic value of ff. Prove that every nonconstant entire function has ∞\infty as an asymptotic value.

Suggestion: Let En={z:∣f(z)∣>n}E_{n} = \left\{ z:\left|f(z)\right| > n\right\}. Each component of EnE_{n} is unbounded (proof?) and contains a component of En+1E_{n+1}, by Exercise 11.

?
Remark.
?

In the complex plane, " γ(t)→∞\gamma (t) \rightarrow \infty as t→1t \rightarrow 1 " means that to each R<∞R < \infty there corresponds a tR<1t_{R} < 1 such that ∣γ(t)∣>R\left|\gamma (t)\right| > R if tR<t<1t_{R} < t < 1.

Problem 2.12.13

Show that exp has exactly two asymptotic values: 0 and ∞\infty. How about sin⁡\sin and cos⁡\cos? Note: sin⁡z\sin z and cos⁡z\cos z are defined, for all complex zz, by

sin⁡z=eiz−e−iz2i,cos⁡z=eiz+e−iz2 \sin z = \frac{e^{i z}-e^{-i z}}{2 i}, \quad \cos z = \frac{e^{i z}+e^{-i z}}{2}

Problem 2.12.14

If ff is entire and if α\alpha is not in the range of ff, prove that α\alpha is an asymptotic value of ff unless ff is constant.

?
Problem 2.12.15

Suppose f∈H(U)f \in H(U). Prove that there is a sequence {zn}\left\{ z_{n}\right\} in UU such that ∣zn∣→1\left|z_{n}\right| \rightarrow 1 and {f(zn)}\left\{ f\left(z_{n}\right)\right\} is bounded.

?
Problem 2.12.16

Suppose Ω\Omega is a bounded region, f∈H(Ω)f \in H(\Omega ), and

lim sup⁡n→∞∣f(zn)∣≤M \limsup _{n \rightarrow \infty }\left|f\left(z_{n}\right)\right| \leq M

for every sequence {zn}\left\{ z_{n}\right\} in Ω\Omega which converges to a boundary point of Ω\Omega. Prove that ∣f(z)∣≤M\left|f(z)\right| \leq M for all z∈Ωz \in \Omega.

?
Problem 2.12.17

Let Φ\Phi be the set of all f∈H(U)f \in H(U) such that 0<∣f(z)∣<10 < \left|f(z)\right| < 1 for z∈Uz \in U, and let Φc\Phi_{c} be the set of all f∈Φf \in \Phi that have f(0)=cf(0) = c. Define

M(c)=sup⁡{∣f′(0)∣:f∈Φc},M=sup⁡{∣f′(0)∣:f∈Φ} M(c) = \sup \left\{ \left|f^{\prime }(0)\right|: f \in \Phi _{c}\right\} , \quad M = \sup \left\{ \left|f^{\prime }(0)\right|: f \in \Phi \right\}

Find MM, and M(c)M(c) for 0<c<10 < c < 1. Find an f∈Φf \in \Phi with f′(0)=Mf^{\prime }(0) = M, or prove that there is no such ff. Suggestion: log⁡f\log f maps UU into the left half plane. Compose log⁡f\log f with a properly chosen map that takes this half plane to UU. Apply the Schwarz lemma.
