Find the lines of equal potential, the streamlines, and the magnitude of the velocity and its components on the axes, if the fluid motion is determined by the motion function w=azw = az; a>0a > 0.

?
Remark.
?

A plane, irrotational motion of an incompressible fluid is characterized by an analytic function w(z)=φ(x,y)+iψ(x,y)w(z) = \varphi (x,y)+i\psi (x,y), where φ\varphi is the velocity potential, and ψ\psi is the stream function. The projections of velocity onto the coordinate axes, vxv_{x} and vyv_{y}, equal the partial derivatives ∂φ∂x\dfrac {\partial \varphi }{\partial x} and ∂φ∂y\dfrac {\partial \varphi }{\partial y}. Hence dwdz=vx−ivy\dfrac {dw}{dz} = v_{x}-iv_{y}. Every fluid particle moves along a streamline ψ(x,y)=C\psi (x,y) = C. The difference of the values of ψ\psi at two points represents the volume of fluid flowing per unit time through a cylinder of unit height whose walls lie on the line joining the given points in the plane XOYXOY. Any streamline, or part of one, may be replaced by a solid wall without disturbing the fluid motion.

?
Remark.
?

Call the flux through a closed contour CC the quantity of fluid EE flowing per unit time through a cylinder of unit height whose base lies along the contour CC. The quantity EE is given by the formula:

E=∫Cvx dy−vy dx. E = \int _{C} v_{x}\, dy-v_{y}\, dx.

The circulation of the velocity along the same contour CC is called the quantity Γ=∫Cvx dx+vy dy\Gamma = \int_{C} v_{x}\, dx+v_{y}\, dy. Since Γ+iE=∫Cdwdz⋅dz\Gamma +iE = \int_{C} \dfrac {dw}{dz}\cdot dz, EE and Γ\Gamma are conveniently found by means of residues. If w=E2πln⁡(z−a)w = \dfrac {E}{2\pi }\ln (z-a), where EE is real, then the point aa is called a source of strength EE. If w=Γ2πiln⁡(z−a)w = \dfrac {\Gamma }{2\pi i}\ln (z-a), where Γ\Gamma is real, then the point aa is called a vortex of intensity Γ\Gamma.

The fluid motion is produced by a source of strength EE (problem 5731), placed at the point aa. Prove that the flux through a simple closed contour CC equals zero if the point aa is outside the contour, and equals EE if the point aa is inside the contour.

?
Remark.

Remark.
?

If the fluid motion in a simply connected domain, determined by a function w(z)w(z), is produced by a vortex of intensity Γ\Gamma, located at the given moment at the point z=az = a, then this vortex is displaced with velocity

dadt=(dw1dz‾)z=a, \frac{da}{dt} = \left(\overline{\frac{dw_{1}}{dz}}\right)_{z=a},

where

w1=w−Γ2πiln⁡(z−a)=φ(x,y)+iψ(x,y). w_{1} = w-\frac{\Gamma }{2\pi i}\ln (z-a) = \varphi (x,y)+i\psi (x,y).

The trajectory of the vortex is given by the equation

?
Remark.
?

If in the identity w(z)=u(x,y)+iv(x,y)w(z) = u(x,y)+iv(x,y); z=x+iyz = x+iy, one introduces a new variable ζ=ξ+iη\zeta = \xi +i\eta, setting

z=φ(ζ)=p(ξ,η)+iq(ξ,η), z = \varphi (\zeta ) = p(\xi ,\eta )+iq(\xi ,\eta ),

then, denoting the quantities w(z)w(z), u(x,y)u(x,y), v(x,y)v(x,y), expressed in terms of ζ\zeta, ξ\xi, and η\eta, by w1(ζ)w_{1}(\zeta ), u1(ξ,η)u_{1}(\xi ,\eta ), v1(ξ,η)v_{1}(\xi ,\eta ), we obtain w1(ζ)=u1(ξ,η)+iv1(ξ,η)w_{1}(\zeta ) = u_{1}(\xi ,\eta )+iv_{1}(\xi ,\eta ). After this, the domain SS in the plane zz goes into a domain S1S_{1} in the plane ζ\zeta, and the streamlines v(x,y)=Cv(x,y) = C go into the streamlines v1(ξ,η)=Cv_{1}(\xi ,\eta ) = C.

Thus, a conformal mapping makes it possible, from the motion in the domain SS, given by the function w(z)w(z), to find the motion in the domain S1S_{1} by means of the function w1(ζ)w_{1}(\zeta ).
