Problem 7.2.1

Complete the proof of (SC4).

(SC4): We have the following: (a) If f(x)=+∞f(\boldsymbol {x})=+\infty, then ff is LSC at x\boldsymbol {x} iff lim⁡y→xf(y)=+∞\lim_{\boldsymbol {y} \rightarrow \boldsymbol {x}} f(\boldsymbol {y})=+\infty. (b) If f(x)=−∞f(\boldsymbol {x})=-\infty, then ff is USC at x\boldsymbol {x} iff lim⁡y→xf(y)=−∞\lim_{\boldsymbol {y} \rightarrow \boldsymbol {x}} f(\boldsymbol {y})=-\infty.

Part (a) of (SC4) is proved in the text; part (b) is left as an easy exercise there, and is precisely what this exercise asks to be completed.

Problem 7.2.2

Give a formal writeup of the proof of the following [intuitively obvious] assertion: the set of x∈I\boldsymbol {x} \in I such that x\boldsymbol {x} is a boundary point of some subrectangle of II at some stage is λk\lambda_{k}-null. This assertion was made at the end of the proof of (SC3).

(SC3): If f(x)=−∞f(\boldsymbol {x})=-\infty, then ff is LSC at x\boldsymbol {x}. If f(x)=+∞f(\boldsymbol {x})=+\infty, then ff is USC at x\boldsymbol {x}. [Vacuously true.]
