Problem 7.1.1

(SC4b) If f(x)=−∞f(\boldsymbol {x})=-\infty, then ff is USC at x\boldsymbol {x} iff lim⁡y→xf(y)=−∞\lim_{\boldsymbol {y} \rightarrow \boldsymbol {x}} f(\boldsymbol {y})= -\infty. (SC7b) fˉ\bar{f} is USC, and is the minimal USC function ⩾f\geqslant f. (SC9) Let AA denote a generic nonempty index set. For each α∈A\alpha \in A, suppose that fαf_{\alpha } is a function from Rk\mathbb {R}^{k} into R‾\overline{\mathbb {R}}. We have the following:

?
(a)

If fαf_{\alpha } is LSC for each α∈A\alpha \in A, then sup⁡α∈Afα\sup_{\alpha \in A} f_{\alpha } is LSC.

(b)

If fαf_{\alpha } is USC for each α∈A\alpha \in A, then inf⁡α∈Afα\inf_{\alpha \in A} f_{\alpha } is USC.

Problem 7.1.2

Let E⊂R‾kE \subset \overline{\mathbb {R}}^{k}.

?
(a)

EE is open iff   1E\; \mathbb {1}_{E} is LSC.

(b)

EE is closed iff   1E\; \mathbb {1}_{E} is USC.

(c)

We have   1E‾=  1E∘\underline{\; \mathbb {1}_{E}}=\; \mathbb {1}_{E^{\circ }} and   1E‾=  1Eˉ\overline{\; \mathbb {1}_{E}}=\; \mathbb {1}_{\bar{E}}.

Problem 7.1.3
?
(a)

If f1f_{1} and f2f_{2} are LSC [or USC] and finite on Rk\mathbb {R}^{k}, then f1+f2f_{1}+f_{2} is LSC [or USC].

(b)

If {fn}n=1∞\left\{ f_{n}\right\}_{n=1}^{\infty } is a sequence of nonnegative LSC [or USC] functions, is ∑n=1∞fn\sum_{n=1}^{\infty } f_{n} necessarily LSC [or USC]?

Problem 7.1.4

Let KK denote a compact subset of Rk\mathbb {R}^{k}.

?
(a)

If ff is a real-valued function that is USC on KK, then ff obtains a local maximum on KK.

(b)

If ff is a real-valued function that is LSC on KK, then ff obtains a local minimum on KK.

Problem 7.1.5

Let AA denote a generic nonempty index set, and suppose for each α∈A\alpha \in A that fαf_{\alpha } is continuous.

?
(a)

It is not necessarily the case that sup⁡α∈Afα\sup_{\alpha \in A} f_{\alpha } is continuous.

(b)

sup⁡α∈Afα\sup_{\alpha \in A} f_{\alpha } is Borel measurable.

(c)

It is not necessarily the case that inf⁡α∈Afα\inf_{\alpha \in A} f_{\alpha } is continuous, but at any rate it is still Borel measurable.

Problem 7.1.6

For each x∈Rk\boldsymbol {x} \in \mathbb {R}^{k} and δ>0\delta >0, define ϕ(x)=inf⁡δ>0sup⁡s,t∈B(x,δ)∣f(s)−f(t)∣\phi (\boldsymbol {x})=\inf_{\delta >0} \sup_{\boldsymbol {s}, \boldsymbol {t} \in B(\boldsymbol {x}, \delta )}\left|f(\boldsymbol {s})-f(\boldsymbol {t})\right|.

?
(a)

ϕ\phi is USC, hence Borel measurable.

(b)

ff is continuous at x\boldsymbol {x} iff ϕ(x)=0\phi (\boldsymbol {x})=0.

(c)

{x∈Rk:f is continuous at x}\left\{ \boldsymbol {x} \in \mathbb {R}^{k}: f \text{ is continuous at } \boldsymbol {x}\right\} is a Borel set. This shows that for any ff, the continuity set of ff [as well as the set of points where ff is discontinuous] is a Borel set.
