Problem 9.1.22

Let KK be a hermitian matrix. Then U:=exp(iK)U := \mathrm{exp}\left(iK\right) is a unitary matrix. A method to find the hermitian matrix KK from the unitary matrix UU is to consider the principal logarithm of a matrix A∈Cn×nA \in \mathbb {C}^{n \times n} with no eigenvalues on R−\mathbb {R}^- (the closed negative real axis). This logarithm is denoted by log⁡(A)\log (A) and is the unique matrix BB such that exp(B)=A\mathrm{exp}\left(B\right) = A and the eigenvalues of BB have imaginary parts lying strictly between −π-\pi and π\pi. For A∈Cn×nA \in \mathbb {C}^{n \times n} with no eigenvalues on R−\mathbb {R}^- we have the following integral representation

log⁡(s(A−In)+In)=∫0s(A−In)(t(A−In)+In)−1dt. \log (s(A-I_n)+I_n) = \int _0^s (A-I_n)(t(A-I_n)+I_n)^{-1}dt.

Thus with s=1s=1 we obtain

log⁡(A)=∫01(A−In)(t(A−In)+In)−1dt. \log (A) = \int _0^1 (A-I_n)(t(A-I_n)+I_n)^{-1}dt.
