Problem 9b.1

If the first column of X\mathbf{X} is 1n\mathbf{1}_{n} and

V=(1−ρ)In+ρ1n1nT(0≤ρ<1) \mathbf{V} = (1-\rho ) \mathbf{I}_{n}+\rho \mathbf{1}_{n} \mathbf{1}_{n}^{T} \quad (0 \leq \rho < 1)

use (9.8) to show that

E[S2]=σ2(1−ρ) \mathbb {E}\left[S^{2}\right] = \sigma ^{2}(1-\rho )

Hint: Consider P1n\mathbf{P 1}_{n}.

Problem 9b.2

When Var⁡[ε]=σ2V\operatorname {Var}\left[\varepsilon \right] = \sigma^{2} \mathbf{V}, the appropriate estimate of β\mathbf{\beta } is the generalized least squares estimate β∗=(XTV−1X)−1XTV−1Y\beta * = \left(\mathbf{X}^{T} \mathbf{V}^{-1} \mathbf{X}\right)^{-1} \mathbf{X}^{T} \mathbf{V}^{-1} \mathbf{Y}. If C(V−1X)=C(X)\mathcal{C}\left(\mathbf{V}^{-1} \mathbf{X}\right) = \mathcal{C}(\mathbf{X}), show that β∗\mathbf{\beta }^{*} and β^\widehat{\mathbf{\beta }} are identical. Hint: V−1X=XW\mathbf{V}^{-1} \mathbf{X} = \mathbf{X W}, where W\mathbf{W} is nonsingular.
