Problem 8e.1

Exercises 3f, No. 2, in Section 3.7 gave the following two-stage method for finding least squares estimates for a general ANCOVA model GG, say. First, we find the least squares estimate β^\widehat{\mathbf{\beta }} of β\mathbf{\beta } for the model E[Y]=Xβ\mathbb {E}\left[\mathbf{Y}\right] = \mathbf{X} \mathbf{\beta } and the residual sum of squares YTRY\mathbf{Y}^{T} \mathbf{R} \mathbf{Y}. Second, γ^G\widehat{\gamma }_{G} is found by replacing Y\mathbf{Y} by Y−Zγ\mathbf{Y}-\mathbf{Z} \mathbf{\gamma } in YTRY\mathbf{Y}^{T} \mathbf{R Y} and minimizing with respect to γ\mathbf{\gamma }. This minimum value is the correct residual sum of squares for the model GG. Third, referring to Theorem 3.6 , we see that β^G\widehat{\mathbf{\beta }}_{G} is obtained from β^\widehat{\mathbf{\beta }} by replacing Y\mathbf{Y} by Y−Xγ^\mathbf{Y}-\mathbf{X} \widehat{\mathbf{\gamma }}. This technique can be applied to the model for HH as well as GG. Now apply this method to the following problem. Consider the model Yij=μi+γixj+εijY_{i j} = \mu_{i}+\gamma_{i} x_{j}+\varepsilon_{i j}, where i=1,2;j=1,2,…,Ji = 1,2 ; j = 1,2, \ldots , J; and the εij\varepsilon_{i j} are independently distributed as N(0,σ2)N\left(0, \sigma^{2}\right). Derive an FF statistic for testing the hypothesis that γ1=γ2\gamma_{1} = \gamma_{2} and show that this statistic is the square of the usual tt-statistic for testing whether two lines are parallel.

?
(a)

Derive the least squares estimate of γ1\gamma_{1} and show that it is an unbiased estimate of γ1\gamma_{1}.

(b)

Find the variance matrix of the least squares estimates γ^i\widehat{\gamma }_{i} of γi(i=1,2)\gamma_{i} (i = 1,2).

(c)

Under what conditions are γ^1\widehat{\gamma }_{1} and γ^2\widehat{\gamma }_{2} statistically independent?

Problem 8e.3

Let Yijk=μij+γijzijk+εijkY_{i j k} = \mu_{i j}+\gamma_{i j} z_{i j k}+\varepsilon_{i j k}, where i=1,2,…,I;i=1,2,…,Ji = 1,2, \ldots , I ; i = 1,2, \ldots , J; k=1,2,…,Kk = 1,2, \ldots , K; and the εijk\varepsilon_{i j k} are independently distributed as N(0,σ2)N\left(0, \sigma^{2}\right). Obtain a test statistic for testing the hypothesis

H:γij=γ( all i,j) H: \gamma _{i j} = \gamma \quad (\text{ all } i, j)
