Problem 10c.2

(a)

Let G=Σ−1X(XTΣ−1X)−1\mathbf{G} = \mathbf{\Sigma }^{-1} \mathbf{X}\left(\mathbf{X}^{T} \mathbf{\Sigma }^{-1} \mathbf{X}\right)^{-1}, and let Q\mathbf{Q} be an orthonormal basis for C(X)⊥\mathcal{C}(\mathbf{X})^{\perp }, so that QQT=In−X(XTX)−1XT\mathbf{Q} \mathbf{Q}^{T} = \mathbf{I}_{n}-\mathbf{X}\left(\mathbf{X}^{T} \mathbf{X}\right)^{-1} \mathbf{X}^{T}. Verify that GTΣQ=0\mathbf{G}^{T} \mathbf{\Sigma } \mathbf{Q} = \mathbf{0} and that GTΣG=(XTΣ−1X)−1\mathbf{G}^{T} \mathbf{\Sigma } \mathbf{G} = \left(\mathbf{X}^{T} \mathbf{\Sigma }^{-1} \mathbf{X}\right)^{-1}.

(b)

Let M=(Σ1/2Q,Σ1/2G)\mathbf{M} = \left(\mathbf{\Sigma }^{1 / 2} \mathbf{Q}, \mathbf{\Sigma }^{1 / 2} \mathbf{G}\right). Show that M\mathbf{M} is of full rank, so that M(MTM)−1MT=In\mathbf{M}\left(\mathbf{M}^{T} \mathbf{M}\right)^{-1} \mathbf{M}^{T} = \mathbf{I}_{n}.

(c)

Use (b) to prove (10.38).

(d)

Use the fact that [det⁡(M)]2=det⁡(MTM)[\operatorname {det}\left(\mathbf{M}\right)]^{2} = \operatorname {det}\left(\mathbf{M}^{T} \mathbf{M}\right) to prove (10.39).

Problem 10c.3
?
(a)

Suppose that Y=(Y1,…,Yn)T\mathbf{Y} = \left(Y_{1}, \ldots , Y_{n}\right)^{T}, where the YiY_{i} 's are independently and identically distributed as N(μ,σ2)N\left(\mu , \sigma^{2}\right). Find the restricted likelihood for QTY\mathbf{Q}^{T} \mathbf{Y}.

(b)

Show that for this example the REML estimate of σ2\sigma^{2} is the usual unbiased estimate S2=(n−1)−1∑i=1n(Yi−Yˉ)2S^{2} = (n-1)^{-1} \sum_{i = 1}^{n}\left(Y_{i}-\bar{Y}\right)^{2}. Thus in this case the REML estimate is unbiased but the MLE is not.

Problem 10c.4

Suppose that Y1,…,YnY_{1}, \ldots , Y_{n} are gamma random variables with density functions

fi(y)=1Γ(r)λiryr−1exp⁡(−y/λi) f_{i}(y) = \frac{1}{\Gamma (r) \lambda _{i}^{r}} y^{r-1} \exp \left(-y / \lambda _{i}\right)

so that E[Yi]=rλi=μi\mathbb {E}\left[Y_{i}\right] = r \lambda_{i} = \mu_{i}, say, and Var⁡[Yi]=r−1μi2\operatorname {Var}\left[Y_{i}\right] = r^{-1} \mu_{i}^{2}. Find a transformation that will make the variances of the YiY_{i} 's approximately equal.
