Problem 18.68

Find the extreme points of each of the following subsets of the plane R2\mathbb {R}^{2} :

?
(i)

{(x,y)∣x2+y2≤1}\left\{ (x, y) \mid x^{2}+y^{2} \leq 1\right\};

(ii)

{(x,y)∣∣x∣+∣y∣≤1}\left\{ (x, y) \mid \left|x\right|+\left|y\right| \leq 1\right\};

(iii)

{(x,y)∣max⁡{x,y}≤1}\left\{ (x, y) \mid \max \left\{ x, y\right\} \leq 1\right\}.

Problem 18.69

In each of the following, BB denotes the closed unit ball of a normed linear space XX.

?
(i)

If XX contains more than one point, show that the only possible extreme points of BB have norm 1.

(ii)

If X=Lp[a,b],1<p<∞X = L^{p}[a, b], 1 < p < \infty, show that every unit vector in BB is an extreme point of BB.

(iii)

If X=L∞[a,b]X = L^{\infty }[a, b], show that the extreme points of BB are those functions f∈Bf \in B such that ∣f∣=1\left|f\right| = 1 almost everywhere on [a,b][a, b].

(iv)

If X=L1[a,b]X = L^{1}[a, b], show that BB fails to have any extreme points.

(v)

If X=lp,1≤p≤∞X = l^{p}, 1 \leq p \leq \infty, what are the extreme points of BB ?

(vi)

If X=C(K)X = C(K), where KK is a compact Hausdorff topological space and XX is normed by the maximum norm, what are the extreme points of BB ?

Problem 18.70

A norm on a linear space is said to be strictly convex provided that whenever uu and vv are distinct unit vectors and 0<λ<10 < \lambda < 1, then ∥λu+(1−λ)v∥<1\left\| \lambda u+(1-\lambda ) v\right\| < 1. Show that the Euclidean norm on Rn\mathbb {R}^{n} and the usual norm on Lp[a,b],1<p<∞L^{p}[a, b], 1 < p < \infty are strictly convex.
