Problem 12.2

For 1≤p<∞1 \leq p < \infty and an index nn, define fn(x)=n1/pf_{n}(x) = n^{1 / p} if 0≤x≤1/n0 \leq x \leq 1 / n and fn(x)=0f_{n}(x) = 0 if 1/n<x≤11 / n < x \leq 1. Let ff be identically zero on [0,1][0,1]. Show that {fn}\left\{ f_{n}\right\} converges pointwise to ff but does not converge in Lp([0,1],m)L^{p}([0,1], m). Problem 12.5

For a measure space (X,M,μ)(X, \mathcal{M}, \mu ) and 0<p<10 < p < 1, define Lp(X,μ)L^{p}(X, \mu ) to be the collection of measurable functions on XX for which ∣f∣p\left|f\right|^{p} is integrable. Show that Lp(X,μ)L^{p}(X, \mu ) is a linear space. For f∈Lp(X,μ)f \in L^{p}(X, \mu ), define ∥f∥pp=∫X∣f∣pdμ\left\| f\right\|_{p}^{p} = \int_{X}\left|f\right|^{p} d \mu. (In general, ∥⋅∥p\left\| \cdot \right\|_{p} is not a norm, since Minkowski's Inequality may fail.)

?
Problem 12.6

Let {fn}\left\{ f_{n}\right\} a Cauchy sequence in L∞(X,μ)L^{\infty }(X, \mu ). Show that there is a measurable subset X0X_{0} of XX for which μ(X∼X0)=0\mu \left(X \sim X_{0}\right) = 0 and for each ϵ>0\epsilon > 0, there is an index NN for which

∣fn−fm∣≤ϵ on X0 for all n,m≥N. \left|f_{n}-f_{m}\right| \leq \epsilon \text{ on } X_{0} \text{ for all } n, m \geq N .

Use this to show that L∞(X,μ)L^{\infty }(X, \mu ) is complete.

Problem 12.8

Define f:R→Rf: \mathbb {R} \rightarrow \mathbb {R} by f(0)=0f(0) = 0 and otherwise f(x)=exp⁡(−1/x2)f(x) = \exp \left(-1 / x^{2}\right). Use the Taylor expansion for exp⁡(x)\exp (x) at x=0x = 0 to show that for each polynomial p(x)p(x),

lim⁡x→0p(1/x)f(x)=0 \lim _{x \rightarrow 0} p(1 / x) f(x) = 0

Use this to show that f∈C∞(R)f \in C^{\infty }(\mathbb {R}), and f(k)(0)=0f^{(k)}(0) = 0 for all kk. For what x∈Rnx \in \mathbb {R}^{n} does the Taylor expansion of ff at x=0x = 0 agree with f(x)f(x) ?
