Problem 2.1

Prove that if AA and BB are two sets in A\mathcal{A} with A⊆BA \subseteq B, then μ(A)≤μ(B)\mu (A) \leq \mu (B). This property is called monotonicity.

?
Problem 2.2

Prove that if there is a set AA in the collection A\mathcal{A} for which μ(A)<∞\mu (A) < \infty, then μ(∅)=0\mu (\emptyset ) = 0.

?
Problem 2.3

Let {Ek}k=1∞\left\{ E_{k}\right\}_{k = 1}^{\infty } be a countable collection of sets in A\mathcal{A}. Prove that μ(⋃k=1∞Ek)≤∑k=1∞μ(Ek)\mu \left(\bigcup_{k = 1}^{\infty } E_{k}\right) \leq \sum_{k = 1}^{\infty } \mu \left(E_{k}\right).

Problem 2.4

A set-function cc is defined on all subsets of R\mathbb {R} as follows: define c(E)c(E) to be ∞\infty if EE has infinitely many members and c(E)c(E) to be the number of members in EE if EE is finite, and define c(∅)=0c(\emptyset ) = 0. Show that cc is a countably additive and translation invariant set-function. This set-function is called the counting measure.
