Problem 1.38

We call an extended real number a cluster point of a sequence {an}\left\{ a_{n}\right\} if a subsequence converges to this extended real number. Show that lim inf⁡{an}\liminf \left\{ a_{n}\right\} is the smallest cluster point of {an}\left\{ a_{n}\right\} and lim sup⁡{an}\limsup \left\{ a_{n}\right\} is the largest cluster point of {an}\left\{ a_{n}\right\}.

Problem 1.39

Prove Proposition 19.

Proposition 19: Let {an}\left\{ a_{n}\right\} and {bn}\left\{ b_{n}\right\} be sequences of real numbers.

  1. lim sup⁡{an}=ℓ∈R\limsup \left\{ a_{n}\right\} = \ell \in \mathbb {R} if and only if for each ϵ>0\epsilon > 0, there are infinitely many indices nn for which an>ℓ−ϵa_{n} > \ell - \epsilon and only finitely many indices nn for which an>ℓ+ϵa_{n} > \ell + \epsilon.

  2. lim sup⁡{an}=∞\limsup \left\{ a_{n}\right\} = \infty if and only if {an}\left\{ a_{n}\right\} is not bounded above.

  3. lim sup⁡{an}=−lim inf⁡{−an}\limsup \left\{ a_{n}\right\} = -\liminf \left\{ -a_{n}\right\}.

  4. A sequence of real numbers {an}\left\{ a_{n}\right\} converges to an extended real number aa if and only if lim inf⁡{an}=lim sup⁡{an}=a\liminf \left\{ a_{n}\right\} = \limsup \left\{ a_{n}\right\} = a.

  5. If an≤bna_{n} \leq b_{n} for all nn, then lim sup⁡{an}≤lim sup⁡{bn}\limsup \left\{ a_{n}\right\} \leq \limsup \left\{ b_{n}\right\}.

Problem 1.40

Show that a sequence {an}\left\{ a_{n}\right\} is convergent to an extended real number if and only if there is exactly one extended real number that is a cluster point of the sequence.

?
Problem 1.41

Show that lim inf⁡an≤lim sup⁡an\liminf a_{n} \leq \limsup a_{n}.

?
Problem 1.42

Prove that if, for all n,an≥0n, a_{n} \geq 0 and bn≥0b_{n} \geq 0, then

lim sup⁡[an⋅bn]≤(lim sup⁡an)⋅(lim sup⁡bn), \limsup \left[a_{n} \cdot b_{n}\right] \leq \left(\limsup a_{n}\right) \cdot \left(\limsup b_{n}\right),

provided the product on the right is not of the form 0⋅∞0 \cdot \infty.

?
Problem 1.43

Show that every real sequence has a monotone subsequence. Use this to provide another proof of the Bolzano-Weierstrass Theorem.

?
Problem 1.44

Let pp be a natural number greater than 1 , and xx a real number, 0≤x≤10 \leq x \leq 1. Show that there is a sequence {an}\left\{ a_{n}\right\} of integers with 0≤an<p0 \leq a_{n} < p for each nn such that

x=∑n=1∞anpn x = \sum _{n = 1}^{\infty } \frac{a_{n}}{p^{n}}

and that this sequence is unique except when xx is of the form q/pn,0<q<pnq / p^{n}, 0 < q < p^{n}, in which case there are exactly two such sequences. Show that, conversely, if {an}\left\{ a_{n}\right\} is any sequence of integers with 0≤an<p0 \leq a_{n} < p, the series

∑n=1∞anpn \sum _{n = 1}^{\infty } \frac{a_{n}}{p^{n}}

converges to a real number xx with 0≤x≤10 \leq x \leq 1. If p=10p = 10, this sequence is called the decimal expansion of xx. For p=2p = 2 it is called the binary expansion; and for p=3p = 3, the ternary expansion.

Problem 1.45

Prove Proposition 20.

Proposition 20: Let {an}\left\{ a_{n}\right\} be a sequence of real numbers.

  1. The series ∑k=1∞ak\sum_{k=1}^{\infty } a_{k} is summable if and only if for each ϵ>0\epsilon > 0, there is an index NN for which ∣∑k=nn+mak∣<ϵ\left|\sum_{k=n}^{n+m} a_{k}\right| < \epsilon for n≥Nn \geq N and any natural number mm.

  2. If the series ∑k=1∞∣ak∣\sum_{k=1}^{\infty } \left|a_{k}\right| is summable, then ∑k=1∞ak\sum_{k=1}^{\infty } a_{k} also is summable.

  3. If each term aka_{k} is non-negative, then the series ∑k=1∞ak\sum_{k=1}^{\infty } a_{k} is summable if and only if the sequence of partial sums is bounded.
