Problem 7.4.1

Suppose that An×n\mathbf{A}_{n\times n} is diagonalizable, and let P=(x→1∣x→2∣⋯∣x→n)\mathbf{P} = \begin{pmatrix} \overrightarrow {x}_1 \mid \overrightarrow {x}_2 \mid \cdots \mid \overrightarrow {x}_n \end{pmatrix} be a matrix whose columns are a complete set of linearly independent eigenvectors corresponding to eigenvalues λi\lambda_i. Show that the solution to u→′=Au→\overrightarrow {u}' = \mathbf{A}\overrightarrow {u}, u→(0)=c→\overrightarrow {u}(0) = \overrightarrow {c}, can be written as

u→(t)=ξ1eλ1tx→1+ξ2eλ2tx→2+⋯+ξneλntx→n \overrightarrow {u}(t) = \xi _1 e^{\lambda _1 t}\overrightarrow {x}_1 + \xi _2 e^{\lambda _2 t}\overrightarrow {x}_2 + \cdots + \xi _n e^{\lambda _n t}\overrightarrow {x}_n

in which the coefficients ξi\xi_i satisfy the algebraic system Pξ→=c→\mathbf{P}\overrightarrow {\xi } = \overrightarrow {c}.

?
Problem 7.4.2

Using only the eigenvalues, determine the long-run behavior of the solution to u→′=Au→\overrightarrow {u}' = \mathbf{A}\overrightarrow {u}, u→(0)=c→\overrightarrow {u}(0) = \overrightarrow {c} for each of the following matrices.

?
(a)

A=(−1−20−3)\mathbf{A} = \begin{pmatrix} -1 & -2 \\ 0 & -3 \end{pmatrix}.

(b)

A=(1−203)\mathbf{A} = \begin{pmatrix} 1 & -2 \\ 0 & 3 \end{pmatrix}.

(c)

A=(1−21−1)\mathbf{A} = \begin{pmatrix} 1 & -2 \\ 1 & -1 \end{pmatrix}.

Problem 7.4.3

Consider two species that coexist in the same environment but compete for the same resources. Suppose that the population of each species increases proportionally to the number of its own kind but decreases proportionally to the number in the competing species---say that the population of each species increases at a rate equal to twice its existing number but decreases at a rate equal to the number in the other population. Suppose that there are initially 100 of species I and 200 of species II.

?
(a)

Determine the number of each species at all future times.

(b)

Determine which species is destined to become extinct, and compute the time to extinction.

Problem 7.4.4

Consider two species that survive in a symbiotic relationship in the sense that the population of each species decreases at a rate equal to its existing number but increases at a rate equal to the existing number in the other population.

?
(a)

If there are initially 200 of species I and 400 of species II, determine the number of each species at all future times.

(b)

Discuss the long-run behavior of each species.
