Problem 2.3.1

Find the method-of-moments estimators for the following distributions

?
(a)

N(a,σ2),  a∈R,σ>0\mathscr {N}\left(a, \sigma^2\right), \; a \in \mathbb {R}, \sigma > 0;

(b)

Γ(α,β)\Gamma (\alpha , \beta ). Recall that the density of the gamma distribution equals

pα,β=βαΓ(α)xα−1e−βx  1x∈[0,+∞), p_{\alpha , \beta } = \frac{\beta ^\alpha }{\Gamma (\alpha )}x^{\alpha - 1}e^{-\beta x} \; \mathbb {1}_{x \in [0, +\infty )},

where α,β>0\alpha , \beta > 0. The gamma function: Γ(α)=∫0∞xα−1e−xdx\Gamma (\alpha ) = \int_0^{\infty } x^{\alpha - 1}e^{-x}dx. This is a continuous analogue of the factorial function, namely Γ(n+1)=n!,  n∈Z+\Gamma (n+1) = n!, \; n \in \mathbb {Z}_+. In general Γ(α+1)=αΓ(α),  ∀α>0\Gamma (\alpha + 1) = \alpha \Gamma (\alpha ), \; \forall \alpha > 0. Another useful value: Γ(12)=π\Gamma (\frac{1}{2}) = \sqrt{\pi }.

(c)

U[a,b],  −∞<a<b<+∞U[a,b], \; -\infty < a < b < +\infty

(d)

Pois⁡(λ),  λ>0\operatorname {Pois}\left(\lambda \right), \; \lambda > 0;

(e)

Bin⁡(m,p),  m∈N,p∈(0,1)\operatorname {Bin}\left(m, p\right), \; m \in \mathbb {N}, p \in (0,1);

(f)

Geom⁡(p)\operatorname {Geom}\left(p\right). Recall that Geom⁡(p)\operatorname {Geom}\left(p\right) is a discrete distribution with support Z+\mathbb {Z}_+ and the following probability function: Pp(k)=(1−p)kp,  k∈Z+P_{p}(k) = (1-p)^kp, \; k \in \mathbb {Z}_+.

(g)

Beta⁡(λ1,λ2)\operatorname {Beta}(\lambda_1, \lambda_2). Recall that the density of the beta distribution equals

pλ1,λ2(x)=xλ1−1(1−x)λ2−1B(λ1,λ2)  1x∈[0,1], p_{\lambda _1, \lambda _2}(x) = \frac{x^{\lambda _1-1}(1 - x)^{\lambda _2 - 1}}{B(\lambda _1, \lambda _2)} \; \mathbb {1}_{x \in [0,1]},

λ1,λ2>0\lambda_1, \lambda_2 > 0. The beta function B(λ1,λ2)B(\lambda_1, \lambda_2):

B(λ1,λ2)=∫01xλ1−1(1−x)λ2−1dx=Γ(λ1)Γ(λ2)Γ(λ1+λ2) B(\lambda _1, \lambda _2) = \int _0^1 x^{\lambda _1 - 1}(1 - x)^{\lambda _2 - 1} dx = \frac{\Gamma (\lambda _1)\Gamma (\lambda _2)}{\Gamma (\lambda _1 + \lambda _2)}
Problem 2.3.2

Find the maximum likelihood estimators for the following distributions:

?
(a)

N(a,σ2)\mathscr {N}\left(a, \sigma^2\right) in three cases: when only one of the parameters is unknown, and when both parameters are unknown;

(b)

Γ(α,β),  α,β>0\Gamma (\alpha , \beta ), \; \alpha ,\beta > 0, if the parameter α\alpha is known;

(c)

U[a,b],  −∞<a<b<+∞U[a,b], \; -\infty < a < b < +\infty

(d)

Pois⁡(λ),  λ>0\operatorname {Pois}\left(\lambda \right), \; \lambda > 0;

(e)

Bin⁡(m,p),  m∈N,p∈(0,1)\operatorname {Bin}\left(m, p\right), \; m \in \mathbb {N}, p \in (0,1), if the parameter mm is known;

(f)

Geom⁡(p),  p∈(0,1)\operatorname {Geom}\left(p\right), \; p \in (0,1).

(g)

Pareto⁡(θ,2),  θ>0\operatorname {Pareto}(\theta , 2), \; \theta > 0. Recall that the Pareto distribution Pareto⁡(x0,α)\operatorname {Pareto}(x_0, \alpha ) is a continuous distribution with density

px0,α(x)=αx0αxα+1  1x∈[x0,+∞). p_{x_0, \alpha }(x) = \frac{\alpha x_0^\alpha }{x^{\alpha + 1}}\; \mathbb {1}_{x \in [x_0, +\infty )}.

x0x_0 is interpreted as the shift of the distribution, and α\alpha as the shape parameter.

Problem 2.3.3

Let X1,…,XnX_1, \ldots , X_n be a sample from a shifted exponential distribution with density

pα,β=1αeβ−xα  1x∈[β,+∞), p_{\alpha , \beta } = \frac{1}{\alpha } e^{\frac{\beta - x}{\alpha }} \; \mathbb {1}_{x \in [\beta , +\infty )},

where θ=(α,β)T∈R+×R\theta = (\alpha , \beta )^T \in \mathbb {R}_+ \times \mathbb {R}. Find the maximum likelihood estimator for θ\theta. Prove that the resulting estimator α^\widehat{\alpha } for α\alpha is asymptotically normal, and find its asymptotic variance.

?
(a)

one observation,

(b)

two observations.

Recall that the Cauchy distribution Cauchy⁡(x0,γ)\operatorname {Cauchy}(x_0, \gamma ) is a continuous distribution with density

pθ,γ(x)=1πγ(1+(x−x0γ)2)=γπ(γ2+(x−x0)2). p_{\theta , \gamma }(x) = \frac{1}{\pi \gamma \left(1 + \left(\frac{x - x_0}{\gamma }\right)^2\right)} = \frac{\gamma }{\pi \left(\gamma ^2 + (x - x_0)^2\right)}.

x0x_0 is interpreted as the shift of the distribution, and γ\gamma as the scale.

Problem 2.3.5

Propose an asymptotically normal estimator of the parameter x02x_0^2 in the Cauchy distribution model Cauchy⁡(x0,1)\operatorname {Cauchy}(x_0, 1) with shift x0x_0 (see problem 3.4), and find its asymptotic variance.

?

(b)

the distribution Cauchy⁡(0,γ),  γ>0\operatorname {Cauchy}(0, \gamma ), \; \gamma > 0 with density pγ(x)=γπ(γ2+x2)p_{\gamma }(x) = \frac{\gamma }{\pi (\gamma^2 + x^2)}.

?
Problem 2.3.8

Let X1,…,XnX_1, \ldots , X_n be a sample from the distribution Pois⁡(λ),  λ>0\operatorname {Pois}\left(\lambda \right), \; \lambda > 0. Find an unbiased estimator of the parameter λ3\lambda^3.

?
Problem 2.3.9

Let X1,…,XnX_1, \ldots , X_n be a sample from the distribution eU[0,θ],  θ>0e^{U[0, \theta ]}, \; \theta > 0. I.e. if ξ∼U[0,θ]\xi \sim U[0, \theta ], then X1∼eξX_1 \sim e^\xi. Find the maximum likelihood estimator of the parameter θ\theta and check it for consistency.
