Problem III.2.1

Let the function ff be defined on R\mathbb {R}. Prove that the following properties of the function ff are equivalent (compare with Problem 1.2):

  1. the function ff is lower semicontinuous;

  2. the set f−1((c,+∞))f^{-1}((c,+\infty )) is open for every c∈Rc \in \mathbb {R};

  3. the set f−1((−∞,c])f^{-1}((-\infty , c]) is closed for every c∈Rc \in \mathbb {R};

  4. if xn→ax_{n} \rightarrow a, then f(a)⩽sup⁡f(xn)f(a) \leqslant \sup f\left(x_{n}\right);

  5. for every point a∈Ra \in \mathbb {R} and every number ε>0\varepsilon >0 there exists a neighborhood VV of the point aa such that f(x)⩾f(a)−εf(x) \geqslant f(a)-\varepsilon for x∈Vx \in V.

Remark.
?

Let Δ⊂R\Delta \subset \mathbb {R} be an arbitrary interval. A function ff, defined on Δ\Delta and possibly taking the value −∞-\infty (+∞+\infty), is called lower (upper) semicontinuous if for every point a∈Δa \in \Delta

f(a)⩽lim‾⁡x→af(x)(f(a)⩾lim‾⁡x→af(x)). f(a) \leqslant \varliminf _{x \rightarrow a} f(x) \quad \left(f(a) \geqslant \varlimsup _{x \rightarrow a} f(x)\right).
Problem III.2.2

Prove that

?
(a)

the characteristic function of a set E⊂RE \subset \mathbb {R} is lower semicontinuous if and only if the set EE is open;

(b)

the function f:R→Rf: \mathbb {R} \rightarrow \mathbb {R}, defined by the equality

f(x)={0, if x is irrational, 1n, if x=mn, where n∈N,m∈Z and mn is in lowest terms.  f(x)= \begin{cases} 0, & \text{ if } x \text{ is irrational, } \\ \frac{1}{n}, & \text{ if } x=\frac{m}{n} \text{, where } n \in \mathbb {N}, m \in \mathbb {Z} \text{ and } \frac{m}{n} \text{ is in lowest terms. } \end{cases}

is upper semicontinuous.

Problem III.2.3

Prove that if a function is lower semicontinuous on the segment [a,b]\left[a, b\right] and takes only finite values, then it attains its least value on [a,b]\left[a, b\right] (and hence is bounded below). Is it true that it is bounded above?

?
Problem III.2.4

Let gg be an arbitrary function defined on an interval Δ⊂R,f(x)=lim‾⁡y→xg(y)(x∈Δ)\Delta \subset \mathbb {R}, f(x)=\varliminf_{y \rightarrow x} g(y)(x \in \Delta ). Prove that the function ff is lower semicontinuous.

?
Problem III.2.5

Let {fα}α∈A\left\{ f_{\alpha }\right\}_{\alpha \in A} be a family of lower semicontinuous functions defined on an interval Δ⊂R,f(x)=sup⁡α∈Afα(x)\Delta \subset \mathbb {R}, f(x)=\sup_{\alpha \in A} f_{\alpha }(x) and f(x)<+∞f(x)<+\infty for every x∈Δx \in \Delta. Prove that the function ff is lower semicontinuous. Is this true for the function h=inf⁡α∈Afαh=\inf_{\alpha \in A} f_{\alpha }? Will the function hh be lower semicontinuous if the family {fα}α∈A\left\{ f_{\alpha }\right\}_{\alpha \in A} is finite? countable?

?
Problem III.2.6

Prove that the function f:[a,b]→Rf:\left[a, b\right] \rightarrow \mathbb {R} is lower semicontinuous if and only if

f=sup⁡{g∣g∈C([a,b]),g⩽f}. f=\sup \left\{ g \mid g \in C(\left[a, b\right]), g \leqslant f\right\} .
