Problem 1.5.1

Suppose that XX and YY are topological spaces and consider their product X×Y={(x,y):x∈X,y∈Y}X \times Y = \left\{ (x, y) : x \in X, y \in Y\right\}. Define a set W⊂X×YW \subset X \times Y to be open if given any (x,y)∈W(x, y) \in W, then there are open sets UU in XX and VV in YY so that (x,y)∈U×V⊂W(x, y) \in U \times V \subset W.

Verify that open sets as defined above satisfy the three properties required of a topology.

Problem 1.5.2

Proposition 1.5.4: Suppose XX is a metric space and x∈Xx \in X. If {sn}\left\{ s_n\right\} is a sequence so that for any ball about xx, the ball contains an infinite number of the sns_n (this means that there are an infinite number of nn so that sns_n is in the ball), then there is a subsequence which converges to xx.

The proof begins as follows: choose n1n_1 so that sn1s_{n_1} is contained in the ball of radius 11 about xx. Since there are an infinite number of the sns_n in the ball of radius 12\tfrac {1}{2} about xx, we can find n2n_2 so that n2>n1n_2 > n_1 and sn2∈B(x,12)s_{n_2} \in B(x, \tfrac {1}{2}). Inductively, we then use the same idea to choose n1<n2<n3<⋯n_1 < n_2 < n_3 < \cdots so that snj∈B(x,1/j)s_{n_j} \in B(x, 1/j). This will give a convergent subsequence.

Fill in the details in this proof: show that the resulting subsequence {snj}\left\{ s_{n_j}\right\} does converge to xx.

?
Problem 1.5.3

Show that if {sn:n∈N}\left\{ s_n : n \in \mathbb {N}\right\} is finite, then the sequence has a convergent subsequence.

?
Problem 1.5.4

Let (X,dX)(X, d_X), (Y,dY)(Y, d_Y) be metric spaces. Then f:X→Yf : X \to Y is said to be uniformly continuous if given ϵ>0\epsilon > 0 there exists a δ>0\delta > 0 such that for x1,x2∈Xx_1, x_2 \in X, dX(x1,x2)<δd_X(x_1, x_2) < \delta implies dY(f(x1),f(x2))<ϵd_Y(f(x_1), f(x_2)) < \epsilon.

Show that ff uniformly continuous implies ff is continuous, but construct an example to show that the converse does not hold.

?
Problem 1.5.5

Let f:X→Yf : X \to Y be a continuous map of the compact metric space (X,dX)(X, d_X) to the metric space (Y,dY)(Y, d_Y). Show that ff is uniformly continuous.

?
Remark.
?

Use the Lebesgue number of the covering {f−1(B(y,ϵ/2))}y∈Y\left\{ f^{-1}(B(y, \epsilon /2))\right\}_{y \in Y} of XX.
