Problem II.3.2.1

CO(n)={A∈Mn(C)∣tA⋅A=E}\mathbb {C} O(n)=\left\{ A \in M_{n}(\mathbb {C}) \mid {}^{t} A \cdot A=E\right\} — the definition of the complex orthogonal group. It is clear that O(n)⊂CO(n)O(n) \subset \mathbb {C} O(n) and SO(n)⊂SCO(n)S O(n) \subset S \mathbb {C} O(n) (the subgroups of O(n)O(n) and CO(n)\mathbb {C} O(n) consisting of elements with determinant 1). Can one, by analogy with Theorem 2, speak of the inclusions CO(n)⊂U(n)\mathbb {C} O(n) \subset U(n) and SCO(n)⊂U(n)S \mathbb {C} O(n) \subset U(n)?

Problem II.3.2.2

Show that the metrics d1d_{1} and d2d_{2} from item 5 are not induced by any inner product on Rn\mathbb {R}^{n} (similarly on Cn\mathbb {C}^{n}).

Problem II.3.2.3

Using functional-analytic tools, verify that the formula

∥x∥p=(∑i=1n∣xi∣p)1/p \left\| \mathbf{x}\right\| _{p}=\left(\sum _{i=1}^{n}\left|x_{i}\right|^{p}\right)^{1 / p}

defines a norm on the space Rn\mathbb {R}^{n} for any p⩾1p \geqslant 1 (the so-called lpl_{p}-norm). Verify that

lim⁡p→∞(∑i=1n∣xi∣p)1/p=max⁡1⩽i⩽n∣xi∣ \lim _{p \rightarrow \infty }\left(\sum _{i=1}^{n}\left|x_{i}\right|^{p}\right)^{1 / p}=\max _{1 \leqslant i \leqslant n}\left|x_{i}\right|

Then one may formally regard d1(x,y)=∥x−y∥∞d_{1}(\mathbf{x}, \mathbf{y})=\left\| \mathbf{x}-\mathbf{y}\right\|_{\infty } (obviously d2(x,y)=∥x−y∥1,d(x,y)=∥x−y∥2d_{2}(\mathbf{x}, \mathbf{y})=\left\| \mathbf{x}-\mathbf{y}\right\|_{1}, d(\mathbf{x}, \mathbf{y})=\left\| \mathbf{x}-\mathbf{y}\right\|_{2}).

On the vector space C(0,1)C(0,1) of continuous functions f:[0,1]→Rf:[0,1] \rightarrow \mathbb {R} there exist analogues of the norms indicated above:

∥f∥∞=max⁡0⩽t⩽1∣f(t)∣,∥f∥1=∫01∣f(t)∣dt. \left\| f\right\| _{\infty }=\max _{0 \leqslant t \leqslant 1}\left|f(t)\right|, \quad \left\| f\right\| _{1}=\int _{0}^{1}\left|f(t)\right| d t.

More generally: ∥f∥p=(∫01∣f(t)∣pdt)1/p\left\| f\right\|_{p}=\left(\int_{0}^{1}|f(t)|^{p} d t\right)^{1 / p} (this exercise is optional).
