Problem 7.1
?
(a)

Let AA represent an m×nm \times n matrix, CC an n×qn \times q matrix, and BB a q×pq \times p matrix. Show that if rank(AC)=rank(C)\mathrm{rank}(AC) = \mathrm{rank}(C), then

R(ACB)=R(CB)andrank(ACB)=rank(CB) \mathcal{R}(ACB) = \mathcal{R}(CB) \quad \text{and} \quad \mathrm{rank}(ACB) = \mathrm{rank}(CB)

and that if rank(CB)=rank(C)\mathrm{rank}(CB) = \mathrm{rank}(C), then

C(ACB)=C(AC)andrank(ACB)=rank(AC). \mathcal{C}(ACB) = \mathcal{C}(AC) \quad \text{and} \quad \mathrm{rank}(ACB) = \mathrm{rank}(AC).
(b)

Let AA and BB represent m×nm \times n matrices. (1) Show that if CC is an r×qr \times q matrix and DD a q×mq \times m matrix such that rank(CD)=rank(D)\mathrm{rank}(CD) = \mathrm{rank}(D), then CDA=CDBCDA = CDB implies DA=DBDA = DB.

(2) Similarly, show that if CC is an n×qn \times q matrix and DD a q×pq \times p matrix such that rank(CD)=rank(C)\mathrm{rank}(CD) = \mathrm{rank}(C), then ACD=BCDACD = BCD implies AC=BCAC = BC.

Remark.
?

To show that DA=DBDA = DB, it suffices to show that rank[D(A−B)]=0\mathrm{rank}[D(A-B)] = 0.
