Problem 5.1

Show that for any m×nm \times n matrix AA, n×pn \times p matrix BB, and p×qp \times q matrix CC,

tr(ABC)=tr(B′A′C′)=tr(A′C′B′). \mathrm{tr}(ABC) = \mathrm{tr}(B'A'C') = \mathrm{tr}(A'C'B').
?
Problem 5.2

Let AA, BB, and CC represent n×nn \times n matrices.

?
(a)

Using the result of Exercise 5.1 (or otherwise), show that if AA, BB, and CC are symmetric, then tr(ABC)=tr(BAC)\mathrm{tr}(ABC) = \mathrm{tr}(BAC).

(b)

Show that [aside from special cases like that considered in Part (a)] tr(BAC)\mathrm{tr}(BAC) is not necessarily equal to tr(ABC)\mathrm{tr}(ABC).

Problem 5.3

Let AA represent an n×nn \times n matrix such that A′A=A2A'A = A^2.

?
(a)

Show that tr[(A−A′)′(A−A′)]=0\mathrm{tr}[(A-A')'(A-A')] = 0.

(b)

Show that AA is symmetric.
