Problem 5578

Prove the identity:

tetz−1et−1=∑n=1∞φn(z)n!tn. t\frac{e^{tz}-1}{e^{t}-1} = \sum _{n=1}^{\infty } \frac{\varphi _{n}(z)}{n!}t^{n}.

Here φn(z)\varphi_{n}(z) are the Bernoulli polynomials, for which

φn(z+1)−φn(z)=nzn−1. \varphi _{n}(z+1)-\varphi _{n}(z) = nz^{n-1}.

For integer z>0z > 0 we have

1nφn(z)=1n−1+2n−1+…+(z−1)n−1. \frac{1}{n}\varphi _{n}(z) = 1^{n-1}+2^{n-1}+\ldots +(z-1)^{n-1}.

A function Φ(z,t)\Phi (z,t) is called generating for the functions φn(z)\varphi_{n}(z) if

Φ(z,t)=∑n=0∞φn(z)tn. \Phi (z,t) = \sum _{n=0}^{\infty } \varphi _{n}(z)t^{n}.

If Φ(z,t)\Phi (z,t) is comparatively simple, then from its properties one can derive a range of properties of the functions φn(z)\varphi_{n}(z).

Below are given examples of generating functions for several important classes of polynomials, together with the principal properties of these polynomials that are to be proved using generating functions, as well as by other means.
