If a linear equation with rational coefficients has a polynomial as a particular solution, it can easily be found. Thus, if the equation (1−x2)y′′−xy′+9y=0(1-x^{2})y''-xy'+9y=0 has a solution in the form of a polynomial y=Axn+Bxn−1+…+My=Ax^{n}+Bx^{n-1}+\ldots +M, then after substituting the polynomial into the left-hand side of this equation, the coefficients of the powers of xx, after collecting like terms, must equal zero. For the coefficient of the highest power of xx, we get the equality: −An(n−1)−An+9A=0-An(n-1)-An+9A=0, or A(n2−9)=0A(n^{2}-9)=0. Since A≠0A\neq 0 and n≠−3n\neq -3, we have n=3n=3. Therefore, if yy in the given equation can be a polynomial, it can only be a polynomial of the third degree. Setting y=Ax3+Bx2+Cx+Dy=Ax^{3}+Bx^{2}+Cx+D and substituting into the given equation, we equate to zero the coefficients of the powers of xx. This gives the equations: B=0B=0, 4C=−3A4C=-3A, D=0D=0. Hence y=A1(4x3−3x)y=A_{1}(4x^{3}-3x) is a solution of the given equation.
