Problem 7.9.2
?
(a)

(b)

Let U1,U2,…,UnU_{1}, U_{2}, \ldots , U_{n} be independent N(0,1)N(0,1) random variables, and let (ai),(bi)\left(a_{i}\right),\left(b_{i}\right) be real non-zero vectors. Show that X=∑iaiUiX = \sum_{i} a_{i} U_{i} and Y=∑ibiUiY = \sum_{i} b_{i} U_{i} satisfy

E[Y∣X]=X∑iaibi∑iai2 \mathbb {E}\left[Y \mid X\right] = X \frac{\sum _{i} a_{i} b_{i}}{\sum _{i} a_{i}^{2}}
Problem 7.9.3

Find the linear function hh of the XiX_{i} which minimizes the mean squared error E[(Y−h(X1,…,Xn))2]\mathbb {E}\left[\left(Y-h\left(X_{1}, \ldots , X_{n}\right)\right)^{2}\right].

?
Problem 7.9.4

Verify the following properties of conditional expectation. You may assume that the relevant expectations exist.

?
(a)

E[E[Y∣g]]=E[Y]\mathbb {E}\left[\mathbb {E}\left[Y \mid g\right]\right] = \mathbb {E}\left[Y\right].

(b)

E[αY+βZ∣g]=αE[Y∣g]+βE[Z∣g]\mathbb {E}\left[\alpha Y+\beta Z \mid g\right] = \alpha \mathbb {E}\left[Y \mid g\right] + \beta \mathbb {E}\left[Z \mid g\right] for α,β∈R\alpha , \beta \in \mathbb {R}.

(c)

E[Y∣g]≥0\mathbb {E}\left[Y \mid g\right] \geq 0 if Y≥0Y \geq 0.

(d)

E[Y∣g]=E[E[Y∣H]∣g]\mathbb {E}\left[Y \mid g\right] = \mathbb {E}\left[\mathbb {E}\left[Y \mid \mathcal{H}\right] \mid g\right] if G⊆H\mathcal{G} \subseteq \mathcal{H}.

(e)

E[Y∣G]=E[Y]\mathbb {E}\left[Y \mid \mathcal{G}\right] = \mathbb {E}\left[Y\right] if YY is independent of IGI_{G} for every G∈GG \in \mathcal{G}.

(f)

Jensen's inequality. g{E[Y∣g]}≤E[g(Y)∣g]g\left\{ \mathbb {E}\left[Y \mid g\right]\right\} \leq \mathbb {E}\left[g(Y) \mid g\right] for all convex functions gg.

(g)

If Yn→ a.s. YY_{n} \xrightarrow {\text{ a.s. }} Y and ∣Yn∣≤Z\left|Y_{n}\right| \leq Z a.s. where E[Z]<∞\mathbb {E}\left[Z\right] < \infty, then E[Yn∣g]→ a.s. E[Y∣g]\mathbb {E}\left[Y_{n} \mid \mathcal{g}\right] \xrightarrow {\text{ a.s. }} \mathbb {E}\left[Y \mid \mathcal{g}\right].

Statements (b)-(f) are of course to be interpreted 'almost surely'.

Problem 7.9.5

Let XX and YY have joint mass function f(x,y)={x(x+1)}−1f(x, y) = \left\{ x(x+1)\right\}^{-1} for x=y=1,2,…x = y = 1,2, \ldots. Show that E[Y∣X]<∞\mathbb {E}\left[Y \mid X\right] < \infty while E[Y]=∞\mathbb {E}\left[Y\right] = \infty

?
Problem 7.9.6

Let (Ω,F,P)(\Omega , \mathcal{F}, \mathbb {P}) be a probability space and let G\mathcal{G} be a sub-σ\sigma-field of F\mathcal{F}. Let HH be the space of G\mathcal{G}-measurable random variables with finite second moment.

?
(a)

Show that HH is closed with respect to the norm ∥⋅∥2\left\| \cdot \right\|_{2}.

(b)

Let YY be a random variable satisfying E[Y2]<∞\mathbb {E}\left[Y^{2}\right] < \infty, and show the equivalence of the following two statements for any M∈HM \in H :

(i) E[(Y−M)Z]=0\mathbb {E}\left[(Y-M) Z\right] = 0 for all Z∈HZ \in H,

(ii) E[(Y−M)IG]=0\mathbb {E}\left[(Y-M) I_{G}\right] = 0 for all G∈GG \in \mathcal{G}.

Problem 7.9.7

For possibly dependent random variables XX and YY, define the maximal correlation coefficient m(X,Y)=sup⁡ρ(f(X),g(Y))m(X, Y) = \sup \rho (f(X), g(Y)), where ρ\rho denotes ordinary correlation, and the supremum is over all functions ff and gg such that f(X)f(X) and g(Y)g(Y) have finite non-zero variances. Show that:

?
(a)

m(X,Y)=0m(X, Y) = 0 if and only if XX and YY are independent,

(b)

m(X,Y)2=sup⁡gVar⁡[E[g(Y)∣X]]m(X, Y)^{2} = \sup_{g} \operatorname {Var}\left[\mathbb {E}\left[g(Y) \mid X\right]\right], where the supremum is over all functions gg such that Var⁡[g(Y)]=1\operatorname {Var}\left[g(Y)\right] = 1

(c)

f^(X)m(X,Y)=E[g^(Y)∣X]\widehat{f}(X) m(X, Y) = \mathbb {E}\left[\widehat{g}(Y) \mid X\right] a.s., where f^\widehat{f} and g^\widehat{g} are functions such that m=ρ(f^(X),g^(Y))m = \rho (\widehat{f}(X), \widehat{g}(Y)).

(d)

We have, a.s., that

E[E[f^(X)∣Y]∣X]=m(X,Y)2f^(X),E[E[g^(Y)∣X]∣Y]=m(X,Y)2g^(Y) \mathbb {E}\left[\mathbb {E}\left[\widehat{f}(X) \mid Y\right] \mid X\right] = m(X, Y)^{2} \widehat{f}(X), \quad \mathbb {E}\left[\mathbb {E}\left[\widehat{g}(Y) \mid X\right] \mid Y\right] = m(X, Y)^{2} \widehat{g}(Y)
(e)

If the ordered triple X,Y,ZX, Y, Z is a Markov chain, show that m(X,Z)≤m(X,Y)m(Y,Z)m(X, Z) \leq m(X, Y) m(Y, Z), with equality if (X,Y)(X, Y) and (Z,Y)(Z, Y) are identically distributed.

(f)

Deduce that, for a pair (U,V)(U, V) with the standard bivariate normal distribution, m(U,V)m(U, V) is an increasing function of the modulus ∣ρ∣\left|\rho \right| of correlation. [It can be shown that m(U,V)=∣ρ∣m(U, V) = \left|\rho \right| in this case.]

Problem 7.9.8

Let ρmon⁡(X,Y)=sup⁡ρ(f(X),g(Y))\rho_{\operatorname {mon}}(X, Y) = \sup \rho (f(X), g(Y)), where the supremum is over all monotonic functions ff and gg such that f(X)f(X) and g(Y)g(Y) have finite, non-zero variances. Show that ρmon (X,Y)=0\rho_{\text{mon }}(X, Y) = 0 if and only if XX and YY are independent.

For random variables X,YX, Y with finite, non-zero variances, show that ρ(X,Y)≤ρmon⁡(X,Y)≤m(X,Y)\rho (X, Y) \leq \rho_{\operatorname {mon}}(X, Y) \leq m(X, Y), where mm is the maximal correlation coefficient.
