Problem 3.10.1

Consider a symmetric simple random walk SS with S0=0S_{0} = 0. Let T=min⁡{n≥1:Sn=0}T = \min \left\{ n \geq 1: S_{n} = 0\right\} be the time of the first return of the walk to its starting point. Show that

P(T=2n)=12n−1(2nn)2−2n \mathbb {P}\left(T = 2 n\right) = \frac{1}{2 n-1}\binom {2 n}{n} 2^{-2 n}

and deduce that E[Tα]<∞\mathbb {E}\left[T^{\alpha }\right] < \infty if and only if α<12\alpha < \frac{1}{2}. You may need Stirling's formula: nn ! ∼nn+12e−n2π\sim n^{n+\frac{1}{2}} e^{-n} \sqrt{2 \pi }

Problem 3.10.2

For a symmetric simple random walk starting at 00, show that the mass function of the maximum satisfies P(Mn=r)=P(Sn=r)+P(Sn=r+1)\mathbb {P}\left(M_{n} = r\right) = \mathbb {P}\left(S_{n} = r\right)+\mathbb {P}\left(S_{n} = r+1\right) for r≥0r \geq 0.

Problem 3.10.3

For a symmetric simple random walk starting at 00, show that the probability that the first visit to S2nS_{2 n} takes place at time 2k2 k equals the product P(S2k=0)P(S2n−2k=0)\mathbb {P}\left(S_{2 k} = 0\right) \mathbb {P}\left(S_{2 n-2 k} = 0\right), for 0≤k≤n0 \leq k \leq n.

Problem 3.10.4

A simple random walk on the integers Z\mathbb {Z} moves one step rightwards with probability pp and otherwise one step leftwards, where p∈(0,1)p \in (0,1). Suppose it starts at 0 and has absorbing barriers at ±a\pm a. Show that the time and place of absorption are independent.

Problem 3.10.5

Let {Xm:m≥1}\left\{ X_{m}: m \geq 1\right\} be independent, identically distributed random variables taking integer values such that P(X1≥−1)=1\mathbb {P}\left(X_{1} \geq -1\right) = 1. Let SnS_{n} be the (generalized) random walk given by Sn=k+X1+X2+⋯+XnS_{n} = k+X_{1}+X_{2}+\cdots +X_{n}, where k≥0k \geq 0 is given, and let T=inf⁡{n≥0:Sn=0}T = \inf \left\{ n \geq 0: S_{n} = 0\right\} be the hitting time of 0.

Show by induction that P(T=n)=(k/n)P(Sn=0)\mathbb {P}\left(T = n\right) = (k / n) \mathbb {P}\left(S_{n} = 0\right) when n≥1,k≥0n \geq 1, k \geq 0.
