Abelian C*-Algebras and the Functional Calculus in C*-Algebras
[7/0%]Prove a converse to the following proposition: if is an abelian -algebra with maximal ideal space and is such that (the -algebra generated by and the identity), then the map defined by is a homeomorphism. Specifically, show: if is a compact subset of , is a singly generated -algebra.
If is an abelian -algebra with a finite number of -generators , then there is a compact subset of and an isometric -isomorphism such that , , where (see Exercise VII.8.12).
If is a compact Hausdorff space, show that is totally disconnected if and only if is the closed linear span of its projections ( hermitian idempotents).
Using the terminology of the preceding exercise, show that if is a -finite measure space, the maximal ideal space of is totally disconnected.
If is a -algebra with identity and , show that is unitary. Is the converse true?
Let be compact and fix a point in . Let
Show that is an abelian -algebra with identity and find its maximal ideal space.
If is completely regular, then is a -algebra and its maximal ideal space is the Stone--Cech compactification of .
