The Krein-Milman Theorem
[10/0%]If is a -finite measure space and , then the set of extreme points of is .
If is a -finite measure space, the set of extreme points of is .
If is a -finite measure space, the set of extreme points of is .
If is completely regular, the set of extreme points of is . So has only two extreme points.
Let be a totally disconnected compact space. (That is, is compact and if and is a neighborhood of , then there is a subset of that is both open and closed and such that . The Cantor set is an example of such a space.) Show that is the norm closure of the convex hull of its extreme points.
If , the result is true for all compact Hausdorff spaces (Phelps [1965]). If , then this characterizes totally disconnected compact spaces (Goodner [1964]).
Show that is the norm closure of the convex hull of its extreme points.
Show that if is locally compact but not compact, then has no extreme points.
If is a LCS and are compact convex subsets of , then and this convex hull is compact.
Let be convex and let be an affine map. If is an extreme point of and is an extreme point of , then is an extreme point of .
If is a Hilbert space and either or is an isometry, show that is an extreme point of the closed unit ball of .
The converse of this is also true, but it may be hard unless you use the Polar Decomposition of operators (VIII.3.11).
