Problem IV.4.1

Let {Xi:i∈I}\left\{ \mathscr {X}_i : i \in I\right\} be a family of LCS's and give X=∏{Xi:i∈I}\mathscr {X} = \prod \left\{ \mathscr {X}_i : i \in I\right\} the product topology. Problem IV.4.3

Recall Proposition 4.2: L∈H(D)∗L \in H(\mathbb {D})^* if and only if there is an r<1r < 1 and a unique function gg analytic on C∞∖Bˉ(0;r)\mathbb {C}_\infty \setminus \bar{B}(0;r) with g(∞)=0g(\infty ) = 0 such that

L(f)=12πi∫γfg L(f) = \frac{1}{2\pi i} \int _\gamma fg

for every ff in H(D)H(\mathbb {D}), where γ(t)=ρeit\gamma (t) = \rho e^{it}, 0≤t≤2π0 \le t \le 2\pi, and r<ρ<1r < \rho < 1.

Problem IV.4.6

(Buck.) Let XX be locally compact and let β\beta be the strict topology on Cb(X)C_b(X): for each ϕ\phi in C0(X)C_0(X), define the seminorm pϕ(f)=∥ϕf∥∞p_\phi (f) = \left\| \phi f\right\|_\infty for ff in Cb(X)C_b(X), and let β\beta be the topology defined by these seminorms. Prove the following statements.

?
(a)

If μ∈M(X)\mu \in M(X) and εn↓0\varepsilon_n \downarrow 0, then there are compact sets K1,K2,…K_1, K_2, \dots such that for each n≥1n \ge 1, Kn⊆int⁡Kn+1K_n \subseteq \operatorname {int} K_{n+1} and ∣μ∣(X∖Kn)<εn\left|\mu \right|(X \setminus K_n) < \varepsilon_n.

(b)

If μ∈M(X)\mu \in M(X), then there is a ϕ\phi in C0(X)C_0(X) such that ϕ≥0\phi \ge 0, ∣μ∣(X∖{x:ϕ(x)>0})=0\left|\mu \right|(X \setminus \left\{ x : \phi (x) > 0\right\} ) = 0, 1/ϕ∈L1(∣μ∣)1/\phi \in L^1(\left|\mu \right|), and ∫1/ϕ d∣μ∣≤1\int 1/\phi \, d\left|\mu \right| \le 1.

(c)

Show that if μ∈M(X)\mu \in M(X) and L(f)=∫f dμL(f) = \int f \, d\mu for ff in Cb(X)C_b(X), then L∈(Cb(X),β)∗L \in (C_b(X), \beta )^*.

(d)

Conversely, if L∈(Cb(X),β)∗L \in (C_b(X), \beta )^*, then there is a μ\mu in M(X)M(X) such that L(f)=∫f dμL(f) = \int f \, d\mu for ff in Cb(X)C_b(X).

Problem IV.4.7

Let XX be completely regular and let M\mathscr {M} be a linear manifold in C(X)C(X). Show that if for every compact subset KK of XX, M∣K≡{f∣K:f∈M}\mathscr {M} | K \equiv \left\{ f | K : f \in \mathscr {M}\right\} is dense in C(K)C(K), then M\mathscr {M} is dense in C(X)C(X).
