Problem IV.3.1

Prove the following. If X\mathscr {X} is a TVS and f:X→Ff : \mathscr {X} \to \mathbb {F} is a linear functional, then the following statements are equivalent.

  1. ff is continuous.

  2. ff is continuous at 00.

  3. ff is continuous at some point.

  4. ker⁡f\ker f is closed.

  5. x↦∣f(x)∣x \mapsto \left|f(x)\right| is a continuous seminorm. If X\mathscr {X} is a LCS and P\mathscr {P} is a family of seminorms that defines the topology on X\mathscr {X}, then the statements above are equivalent to the following:

  6. There are p1,…,pnp_1, \dots , p_n in P\mathscr {P} and positive scalars α1,…,αn\alpha_1, \dots , \alpha_n such that ∣f(x)∣≤∑k=1nαkpk(x)\left|f(x)\right| \le \sum_{k=1}^{n} \alpha_k p_k(x) for all xx.

Problem IV.3.2

Recall the following construction (Proposition 3.2): if X\mathscr {X} is a TVS and GG is an open convex subset of X\mathscr {X} containing the origin, and

q(x)=inf⁡{t:t≥0 and x∈tG}, q(x) = \inf \left\{ t : t \ge 0 \text{ and } x \in tG\right\} ,

then qq is a non-negative continuous sublinear functional and G={x:q(x)<1}G = \left\{ x : q(x) < 1\right\}.

Now let pp be a sublinear functional, G≡{x:p(x)<1}G \equiv \left\{ x : p(x) < 1\right\}, and define the sublinear functional qq for the set GG as above. Show that q(x)=max⁡(p(x),0)q(x) = \max (p(x), 0) for all xx in X\mathscr {X}.

Problem IV.3.3

Let M⊆X\mathscr {M} \subseteq \mathscr {X}, a TVS, and show that the following statements are equivalent:

  1. M\mathscr {M} is an affine hyperplane;

  2. there exists an x0x_0 in M\mathscr {M} such that M−x0\mathscr {M} - x_0 is a hyperplane;

  3. there is a non-zero linear function f:X→Ff : \mathscr {X} \to \mathbb {F} and an α\alpha in F\mathbb {F} such that M={x∈X:f(x)=α}\mathscr {M} = \left\{ x \in \mathscr {X} : f(x) = \alpha \right\}.

?
Problem IV.3.4

Let X\mathscr {X} be a real TVS. Show:

?
(a)

if GG is an open connected subset of X\mathscr {X}, then GG is arcwise connected;

(b)

if f:X→Rf : \mathscr {X} \to \mathbb {R} is a continuous non-zero linear functional, then X∖ker⁡f\mathscr {X} \setminus \ker f has two components, {x:f(x)>0}\left\{ x : f(x) > 0\right\} and {x:f(x)<0}\left\{ x : f(x) < 0\right\}.

Problem IV.3.5

If X\mathscr {X} is a complex TVS and f:X→Cf : \mathscr {X} \to \mathbb {C} is a nonzero continuous linear function, show that X∖ker⁡f\mathscr {X} \setminus \ker f is connected.

?
Problem IV.3.6

Let X\mathscr {X} be a real TVS. Prove the following.

?
(a)

The closure of an open half-space is a closed half-space and the interior of a closed half-space is an open half-space. (Here a subset SS of X\mathscr {X} is an open half-space if there is a continuous linear functional f:X→Rf : \mathscr {X} \to \mathbb {R} such that S={x∈X:f(x)>α}S = \left\{ x \in \mathscr {X} : f(x) > \alpha \right\} for some α\alpha; SS is a closed half-space if S={x∈X:f(x)≥α}S = \left\{ x \in \mathscr {X} : f(x) \ge \alpha \right\} for some continuous linear functional ff and some α\alpha.)

(b)

If A,B⊆XA, B \subseteq \mathscr {X}, then AA and BB are strictly separated (separated) if and only if there is a continuous linear functional f:X→Rf : \mathscr {X} \to \mathbb {R} and a real scalar α\alpha such that f(a)>αf(a) > \alpha for all aa in AA and f(b)<αf(b) < \alpha for all bb in BB (f(a)≥αf(a) \ge \alpha for all aa in AA and f(b)≤αf(b) \le \alpha for all bb in BB). (Two subsets AA and BB of X\mathscr {X} are strictly separated if they are contained in disjoint open half-spaces; they are separated if they are contained in two closed half-spaces whose intersection is a closed affine hyperplane.)

Problem IV.3.7

If f:X→Rf : \mathscr {X} \to \mathbb {R} is a continuous R\mathbb {R}-linear functional and AA is an open convex subset of X\mathscr {X}, then f(A)f(A) is an open interval.

?
Problem IV.3.8

Prove the following. If X\mathscr {X} is a real LCS and A⊆XA \subseteq \mathscr {X}, then the closed linear span of AA is the intersection of all closed hyperplanes containing AA.

?
Problem IV.3.9

Prove the following. Let X\mathscr {X} be a complex LCS and let AA and BB be two disjoint closed convex subsets of X\mathscr {X}. If BB is compact, then there is a continuous linear functional f:X→Cf : \mathscr {X} \to \mathbb {C}, an α\alpha in R\mathbb {R}, and an ε>0\varepsilon > 0 such that for aa in AA and bb in BB,

Re⁡f(a)≤α<α+ε≤Re⁡f(b). \operatorname {Re} f(a) \le \alpha < \alpha + \varepsilon \le \operatorname {Re} f(b).
?
Problem IV.3.10

Recall Theorem 3.7: if X\mathscr {X} is a real TVS and AA and BB are disjoint convex sets with AA open, then there is a continuous linear functional f:X→Rf : \mathscr {X} \to \mathbb {R} and a real scalar α\alpha such that f(a)<αf(a) < \alpha for all aa in AA and f(b)≥αf(b) \ge \alpha for all bb in BB. If BB is also open, then AA and BB are strictly separated.

State and prove a version of this theorem for a complex TVS.

?
Problem IV.3.11

Recall Corollary 3.11: if X\mathscr {X} is a real LCS and A⊆XA \subseteq \mathscr {X}, then co⁡‾(A)\overline{\operatorname {co}}(A) is the intersection of the closed half-spaces containing AA.

State and prove a version of this corollary for a complex LCS.

?
Problem IV.3.12

Recall Corollary 3.12: if X\mathscr {X} is a real LCS and A⊆XA \subseteq \mathscr {X}, then the closed linear span of AA is the intersection of all closed hyperplanes containing AA.

State and prove a version of this corollary for a complex LCS.

Problem IV.3.13

For 0<p<10 < p < 1, let Lp(0,1)L^p(0,1) be the collection of equivalence classes of measurable functions f:(0,1)→Rf : (0,1) \to \mathbb {R} such that

((f))p=∫01∣f(x)∣p dx<∞. ((f))_p = \int _0^1 \left|f(x)\right|^p \, dx < \infty .

Given f,g∈Lp(0,1)f, g \in L^p(0,1), put d(f,g)=((f−g))pd(f,g) = ((f-g))_p; this is a translation-invariant metric on Lp(0,1)L^p(0,1). Prove that Lp(0,1)L^p(0,1), 0<p<10 < p < 1, is complete with respect to dd.

Give an example of a TVS X\mathscr {X} that is not locally convex and a subspace Y\mathscr {Y} of X\mathscr {X} such that there is a continuous linear functional ff on Y\mathscr {Y} with no continuous extension to X\mathscr {X}.

?
Problem IV.3.15

Let X\mathscr {X} be a real LCS and let AA and BB be disjoint compact convex subsets of X\mathscr {X}. Suppose Y\mathscr {Y} is a subspace of X\mathscr {X} and f0:Y→Rf_0 : \mathscr {Y} \to \mathbb {R} is a continuous linear functional such that f0(a)<0f_0(a) < 0 for aa in A∩YA \cap \mathscr {Y} and f0(b)>0f_0(b) > 0 for bb in B∩YB \cap \mathscr {Y}. Show by an example that it is not always possible to extend f0f_0 to a continuous linear functional on X\mathscr {X} such that f(a)<0f(a) < 0 for aa in AA and f(b)>0f(b) > 0 for bb in BB.
