Metrizable and Normable Locally Convex Spaces
[8/0%]Let be a sequence of seminorms on such that . For and in , define
Then is a metric on and the topology on defined by is the topology on defined by the seminorms . Thus a locally convex space is metrizable if and only if its topology is determined by a countable family of seminorms. Supply the missing details in the proof of this proposition: show that is a metric and induces the same topology as .
Let be completely regular and let be all continuous functions from into , topologized by the seminorms for compact in . Then is metrizable if and only if , where each is compact, , and if is any compact subset of , then for some . Verify this statement.
Let be locally compact and let be as in Exercise 2 above. Then is metrizable if and only if is -compact (that is, is the union of a sequence of compact sets). Also, the space of analytic functions on an open set , topologized by uniform convergence on compact subsets, is metrizable. Verify these statements.
Let be a TVS and prove the following.
If is a bounded subset of , then so is .
The finite union of bounded sets is bounded.
Every compact set is bounded.
If , then is bounded if and only if for every sequence contained in and for every in , in .
If is a TVS, is a continuous linear transformation, and is a bounded subset of , then is a bounded subset of .
If is a LCS and , then is bounded if and only if for every continuous seminorm , .
If is a normed space and , then is bounded if and only if .
If is a Fréchet space, then bounded sets have finite diameter, but not conversely.
The translate of a bounded set is bounded.
If is a LCS, show that is metrizable if and only if is first countable. Is this equivalent to saying that is a set?
Let be a locally compact space and give the strict topology : for each in , define the seminorm for in , and let be the topology defined by these seminorms. Show that a subset of is -bounded if and only if it is norm bounded.
With the notation of Exercise 6, show that is metrizable if and only if is compact.
