Problem III.1.1

Complete the proof of Proposition 1.3: if X\mathcal{X} is a normed space, then

?
(a)

the function X×X→X\mathcal{X} \times \mathcal{X} \to \mathcal{X} defined by (x,y)↦x+y(x, y) \mapsto x + y is continuous;

(b)

the function F×X→X\mathbb {F} \times \mathcal{X} \to \mathcal{X} defined by (α,x)↦αx(\alpha , x) \mapsto \alpha x is continuous.

(Part (a) has been proved in the text; only part (b) remains.)

Problem III.1.2

Complete the proof of Proposition 1.5: if ∥⋅∥1\left\| \cdot \right\|_{1} and ∥⋅∥2\left\| \cdot \right\|_{2} are two norms on X\mathcal{X}, then these norms are equivalent if and only if there are positive constants cc and CC such that

c∥x∥1≤∥x∥2≤C∥x∥1 c \left\| x\right\| _{1} \leq \left\| x\right\| _{2} \leq C \left\| x\right\| _{1}

for all xx in X\mathcal{X}. (The implication ``constants exist ⇒\Rightarrow equivalent'' has been proved in the text; only the converse implication remains.)

?
Problem III.1.3

For 1≤p<∞1 \leq p < \infty and x=(x1,…,xd)x = (x_1, \ldots , x_d) in Fd\mathbb {F}^d, define ∥x∥p≡[∑j=1d∣xj∣p]1/p\left\| x\right\|_{p} \equiv \left[\sum_{j=1}^{d} \left|x_j\right|^p\right]^{1/p}; define ∥x∥∞≡sup⁡{∣xj∣:1≤j≤d}\left\| x\right\|_{\infty } \equiv \sup \left\{ \left|x_j\right| : 1 \leq j \leq d\right\}. Show that all of these norms are equivalent. For 1≤p,q≤∞1 \leq p, q \leq \infty, what are the best constants cc and CC such that c∥x∥p≤∥x∥q≤C∥x∥pc \left\| x\right\|_{p} \leq \left\| x\right\|_{q} \leq C \left\| x\right\|_{p} for all xx in Fd\mathbb {F}^d?

?
Problem III.1.4

If 1≤p≤∞1 \leq p \leq \infty and ∥⋅∥p\left\| \cdot \right\|_{p} is defined on R2\mathbb {R}^2 as in Exercise 3, graph {x∈R2:∥x∥p=1}\left\{ x \in \mathbb {R}^2 : \left\| x\right\|_{p} = 1\right\}. Note that if 1<p<∞1 < p < \infty, ∥x∥p=∥y∥p=1\left\| x\right\|_{p} = \left\| y\right\|_{p} = 1, and x≠yx \neq y, then for 0<t<10 < t < 1, ∥tx+(1−t)y∥p<1\left\| tx + (1-t)y\right\|_{p} < 1. The same cannot be said for p=1,∞p = 1, \infty.

Problem III.1.5

Let c=c = the set of all sequences {αn}1∞\left\{ \alpha_n\right\}_1^\infty, αn\alpha_n in F\mathbb {F}, such that lim⁡αn\lim \alpha_n exists. Show that cc is a closed subspace of l∞l^\infty and hence is a Banach space.

?
Problem III.1.6

Let X={n−1:n≥1}∪{0}X = \left\{ n^{-1} : n \geq 1\right\} \cup \left\{ 0\right\}. Show that C(X)C(X) and the space of cc of Exercise 5 are isometrically isomorphic.

?
(a)

Show that if 1≤p<∞1 \leq p < \infty and II is an infinite set, then lp(I)l^p(I) has a dense set of the same cardinality as II.

(b)

Show that if 1≤p<∞1 \leq p < \infty, lp(I)l^p(I) and lp(J)l^p(J) are isometrically isomorphic if and only if II and JJ have the same cardinality.

Problem III.1.7

If l∞(I)l^\infty (I) and l∞(J)l^\infty (J) are isometrically isomorphic, do II and JJ have the same cardinality?

?
Problem III.1.8

Show that l∞l^\infty is not separable.

?
Problem III.1.9

Complete the proof of Proposition 1.7: if XX is a locally compact space and C0(X)=C_0(X) = all continuous functions f:X→Ff : X \to \mathbb {F} such that for all ε>0\varepsilon > 0, {x∈X:∣f(x)∣≥ε}\left\{ x \in X : \left|f(x)\right| \geq \varepsilon \right\} is compact, then C0(X)C_0(X) is a closed subspace of Cb(X)C_b(X) and hence is a Banach space. (It has been shown in the text that C0(X)C_0(X) is closed in Cb(X)C_b(X); only the fact that C0(X)C_0(X) is a linear manifold in Cb(X)C_b(X) remains.)

?
Problem III.1.10

Verify the statements in Example 1.10: let n≥1n \geq 1 and let C(n)[0,1]=C^{(n)}[0,1] = the collection of functions f:[0,1]→Ff : [0,1] \to \mathbb {F} such that ff has nn continuous derivatives. Define ∥f∥=sup⁡0≤k≤n{sup⁡{∣f(k)(x)∣:0≤x≤1}}\left\| f\right\| = \sup_{0 \leq k \leq n} \left\{ \sup \left\{ \left|f^{(k)}(x)\right| : 0 \leq x \leq 1\right\} \right\}. Then C(n)[0,1]C^{(n)}[0,1] is a Banach space.

?
Problem III.1.11

Verify the statements in Example 1.11: let 1≤p<∞1 \leq p < \infty and n≥1n \geq 1 and let Wpn[0,1]=W_p^n[0,1] = the functions f:[0,1]→Ff : [0,1] \to \mathbb {F} such that ff has n−1n - 1 continuous derivatives, f(n−1)f^{(n-1)} is absolutely continuous, and f(n)∈Lp[0,1]f^{(n)} \in L^p[0,1]. For ff in Wpn[0,1]W_p^n[0,1], define

∥f∥=∑k=0n[∫01∣f(k)(x)∣p dx]1/p. \left\| f\right\| = \sum _{k=0}^{n} \left[\int _0^1 \left|f^{(k)}(x)\right|^p \, dx\right]^{1/p}.

Then Wpn[0,1]W_p^n[0,1] is a Banach space.

?

Show that C0(X)C_0(X) and {f∈C(X∞):f(∞)=0}\left\{ f \in C(X_\infty ) : f(\infty ) = 0\right\}, with the norm it inherits as a subspace of C(X∞)C(X_\infty ), are isometrically isomorphic Banach spaces.

?
Problem III.1.13

Let XX be locally compact and define Cc(X)C_c(X) to be the continuous functions f:X→Ff : X \to \mathbb {F} such that spt f≡cl{x∈X:f(x)≠0}\mathrm{spt}\, f \equiv \mathrm{cl}\left\{ x \in X : f(x) \neq 0\right\} is compact (spt f\mathrm{spt}\, f is the support of ff). Show that Cc(X)C_c(X) is dense in C0(X)C_0(X).

?
Problem III.1.14

If Wpn[0,1]W_p^n[0,1] is defined as in Example 1.11 and f∈Wpn[0,1]f \in W_p^n[0,1], let \vertiiif≡[∫∣f(x)∣p dx]1/p+[∫∣f(n)(x)∣p dx]1/p\vertiii {f} \equiv \left[\int \left|f(x)\right|^p \, dx\right]^{1/p} + \left[\int \left|f^{(n)}(x)\right|^p \, dx\right]^{1/p}. Show that \vertiii⋅\vertiii {\cdot } is equivalent to the norm defined on Wpn[0,1]W_p^n[0,1].

?
