Problem 1.2.1

Let ff be a bounded, continuous, real-valued function on R2\mathbb {R}^{2}. Define the function gg on R\mathbb {R} by

g(x)=∫−∞∞f(x,t)1+t2 dt. g(x) = \int _{-\infty }^{\infty } \frac{f(x,t)}{1+t^{2}}\, dt.

Prove that gg is continuous.

Problem 1.2.2

Suppose that ff maps the compact interval II into itself and that

∣f(x)−f(y)∣<∣x−y∣ \left|f(x)-f(y)\right| < \left|x-y\right|

for all x,y∈Ix, y \in I, x≠yx \neq y. Can one conclude that there is some constant M<1M < 1 such that, for all x,y∈Ix, y \in I,

∣f(x)−f(y)∣≤M∣x−y∣? \left|f(x)-f(y)\right| \leq M\left|x-y\right|\text{?}

Problem 1.2.3

Let the real valued function ff on [0,1][0,1] have the following two properties:

  • If [a,b]⊂[0,1][a,b] \subset [0,1], then f([a,b])f([a,b]) contains the interval with endpoints f(a)f(a) and f(b)f(b) (i.e., ff has the Intermediate Value Property).

Prove that ff is continuous.

?
Problem 1.2.5

Suppose that ff is a continuous function on R\mathbb {R} which is periodic with period 1, i.e., f(x+1)=f(x)f(x+1) = f(x). Show:

?

(2)

(3)

There exists a real number x0x_{0} such that

f(x0+π)=f(x0). f(x_{0}+\pi ) = f(x_{0}).
Problem 1.2.6

Let h:[0,1)→Rh: [0,1) \rightarrow \mathbb {R} be a function defined on the half-open interval [0,1)[0,1). Prove that if hh is uniformly continuous, there exists a unique continuous function g:[0,1]→Rg: [0,1] \rightarrow \mathbb {R} such that g(x)=h(x)g(x) = h(x) for all x∈[0,1)x \in [0,1).
