Problem 30.1

If S\mathcal{S} is a metric space, then it is well known that C(S)C(\mathcal{S}), the collection of continuous functions with the metric

d(f,g)=sup⁡x∈S∣f(x)−g(x)∣ d(f, g)=\sup _{x \in \mathcal{S}}|f(x)-g(x)|

is a metric space. Show that if S\mathcal{S} is compact, then C(S)C(\mathcal{S}) is separable.

Problem 30.2

Suppose XnX_{n} converges weakly to XX and the random variables ZnZ_{n} are such that d(Xn,Zn)d\left(X_{n}, Z_{n}\right) converges to 0 in probability. Prove that ZnZ_{n} converges weakly to XX. This is known as Slutsky's theorem.

Hint: Start with P(Zn∈F)≤P(Xn∈Fδ‾)+P(d(Xn,Zn)≥δ)\mathbb {P}\left(Z_{n} \in F\right) \leq \mathbb {P}\left(X_{n} \in \overline{F_{\delta }}\right)+\mathbb {P}\left(d\left(X_{n}, Z_{n}\right) \geq \delta \right).

Problem 30.3

Suppose XnX_{n} take values in a normed linear space and converge weakly to XX. Suppose cnc_{n} are scalars converging to cc. Show cnXnc_{n} X_{n} converges weakly to cXc X.

Give an example of a sequence Pn\mathbb {P}_{n} converging weakly to P\mathbb {P} and a function ff that is continuous but not bounded such that ∫fdPn\int f d \mathbb {P}_{n} does not converge to ∫fdP\int f d \mathbb {P}.

?
Problem 30.5

Give an example of a sequence Pn\mathbb {P}_{n} converging weakly to P\mathbb {P} and a function ff that is bounded but not continuous such that ∫fdPn\int f d \mathbb {P}_{n} does not converge to ∫fdP\int f d \mathbb {P}.

?
Problem 30.6

Show that if XnX_{n} converges weakly to XX and YnY_{n} converges in probability to 0 , then XnYnX_{n} Y_{n} converges in probability to 0 .

?
Problem 30.7

This exercise considers a sequence of probability measures that have densities. Suppose S\mathcal{S} is furnished with the Borel σ\sigma-field and μ\mu is a measure on S\mathcal{S}. Suppose that fn:S→[0,∞)f_{n}: \mathcal{S} \rightarrow [0, \infty ) and f:S→[0,∞)f: \mathcal{S} \rightarrow [0, \infty ) are measurable functions, each of whose integral over S\mathcal{S} is one, and define Pn(A)=∫Afn(x)μ(dx)\mathbb {P}_{n}(A)=\int_{A} f_{n}(x) \mu (d x) for each nn and P(A)=∫Af(x)μ(dx)\mathbb {P}\left(A\right)=\int_{A} f(x) \mu (d x).

?
(1)

Show that if fn→f,μf_{n} \rightarrow f, \mu-a.e., then Pn\mathbb {P}_{n} converges weakly to P\mathbb {P}.

(2)

Give an example where Pn\mathbb {P}_{n} and P\mathbb {P} are as above, Pn\mathbb {P}_{n} converges weakly to P\mathbb {P}, but fnf_{n} does not converge almost everywhere to ff.

Problem 30.8

Give an example of continuous processes XnX_{n} and XX such that all the finite-dimensional distributions of XnX_{n} converge weakly to the corresponding finite-dimensional distributions of XX, but where XnX_{n} does not converge weakly to XX with respect to the topology of C[0,1]C[0,1].

?
Problem 30.9

Suppose XX is a random variable taking values in a complete separable metric space. If ε>0\varepsilon >0, show there exists a compact set KK such that P(X∉K)<ε\mathbb {P}\left(X \notin K\right)<\varepsilon.

Hint: For each nn choose closed balls {Bni,i=1,…,Nn}\left\{ B_{n i}, i=1, \ldots , N_{n}\right\} such that

P(X∉∪i=1NnBni)<ε/2n+1. \mathbb {P}\left(X \notin \cup _{i=1}^{N_{n}} B_{n i}\right)<\varepsilon / 2^{n+1}.

Then K=∩n=1∞∪i=1NnBniK=\cap_{n=1}^{\infty } \cup_{i=1}^{N_{n}} B_{n i} is totally bounded, hence compact.

Problem 30.10

Suppose XnX_{n} converges weakly to XX and the metric space S\mathcal{S} is complete and separable. Prove that the sequence {Xn}\left\{ X_{n}\right\} is tight.

?
Problem 30.11

Let L\mathcal{L} be the collection of continuous functions on S\mathcal{S} such that

  1. sup⁡x∈S∣f(x)∣≤1\sup_{x \in \mathcal{S}}|f(x)| \leq 1.

  2. ∣f(x)−f(y)∣≤d(x,y)|f(x)-f(y)| \leq d(x, y) for all x,y∈Sx, y \in \mathcal{S}.

Define

dL(P,Q)=sup⁡f∈L∣∫f dP−∫f dQ∣. d_{\mathcal{L}}(\mathbb {P}, \mathbb {Q})=\sup _{f \in \mathcal{L}}\left|\int f \, d\mathbb {P}-\int f \, d \mathbb {Q}\right| .

Show that dLd_{\mathcal{L}} is a metric on the collection of probability measures on the Borel σ\sigma-field of S\mathcal{S}. Prove that a sequence of probability measures Pn\mathbb {P}_{n} converges weakly to P\mathbb {P} if and only if dL(Pn,P)→0d_{\mathcal{L}}\left(\mathbb {P}_{n}, \mathbb {P}\right) \rightarrow 0.

?
