Problem 3.1

If WW is a Brownian motion, show that

Wt3−3∫0tWsds W_{t}^{3}-3 \int _{0}^{t} W_{s} d s

is a martingale.

?
Problem 3.2

Suppose {Ft}\left\{ \mathcal{F}_{t}\right\} is a filtration satisfying the usual conditions. Show that if MtM_{t} is a submartingale and E[Mt]=E[M0]\mathbb {E}\left[M_{t}\right]=\mathbb {E}\left[M_{0}\right] for all tt, then MM is a martingale.

?
Problem 3.3

Let XX be a submartingale. Show that sup⁡t≥0E[∣Xt∣]<∞\sup_{t \geq 0} \mathbb {E}\left[\left|X_{t}\right|\right]<\infty if and only if sup⁡t≥0E[Xt+]<∞\sup_{t \geq 0} \mathbb {E}\left[X_{t}^{+}\right]<\infty.

?
Problem 3.4

Prove all parts of Proposition 3.8.

Proposition 3.8: Suppose {Ft}\left\{ \mathcal{F}_{t}\right\} satisfies the usual conditions. Then

  1. TT is a stopping time if and only if (T≤t)∈Ft(T \leq t) \in \mathcal{F}_{t} for all tt.

  2. If T=tT=t, a.s., then TT is a stopping time.

  3. If SS and TT are stopping times, then so are S∨TS \vee T and S∧TS \wedge T.

  4. If Tn,n=1,2,…T_{n}, n=1,2, \ldots, are stopping times with T1≤T2≤⋯T_{1} \leq T_{2} \leq \cdots, then so is sup⁡nTn\sup_{n} T_{n}.

  5. If Tn,n=1,2,…T_{n}, n=1,2, \ldots, are stopping times with T1≥T2≥⋯T_{1} \geq T_{2} \geq \cdots, then so is inf⁡nTn\inf_{n} T_{n}.

  6. If s≥0s \geq 0 and SS is a stopping time, then so is S+sS+s.

?
Problem 3.5

If TnT_{n} is defined by (3.2), show TnT_{n} is a stopping time for each nn and Tn↓TT_{n} \downarrow T.

?
Problem 3.6

This exercise gives an alternate definition of FT\mathcal{F}_{T} which is more appealing, but not as useful. Suppose that {Ft}\left\{ \mathcal{F}_{t}\right\} satisfies the usual conditions. Show that FT\mathcal{F}_{T} is equal to the σ\sigma-field generated by the collection of random variables YTY_{T} such that YY is a bounded process with paths that are right continuous with left limits and YY is adapted to the filtration {Ft}\left\{ \mathcal{F}_{t}\right\}.

?
Problem 3.7

Suppose {Ft}\left\{ \mathcal{F}_{t}\right\} is a filtration satisfying the usual conditions. Show that if TT is a stopping time, then TT is FT\mathcal{F}_{T} measurable.

?
Problem 3.8

Suppose {Ft}\left\{ \mathcal{F}_{t}\right\} is a filtration satisfying the usual conditions and TT is a stopping time. Show that if SS is a FT\mathcal{F}_{T} measurable random variable with S≥TS \geq T, then SS is a stopping time.

?
Problem 3.9

This exercise demonstrates that the conclusion of Corollary 3.13 cannot be extended to submartingales. Find a filtration {Ft}\left\{ \mathcal{F}_{t}\right\} satisfying the usual conditions and a submartingale XX with respect to {Ft}\left\{ \mathcal{F}_{t}\right\} such that XX does not have a version with paths that are right continuous with left limits.

?
Problem 3.10

Suppose {Ft}\left\{ \mathcal{F}_{t}\right\} is a filtration satisfying the usual conditions. Show that if SS and TT are stopping times and XX is a bounded F∞\mathcal{F}_{\infty } measurable random variable, then

E[E[X∣FS]∣FT]=E[X∣FS∧T] \mathbb {E}\left[\mathbb {E}\left[X \mid \mathcal{F}_{S}\right] \mid \mathcal{F}_{T}\right]=\mathbb {E}\left[X \mid \mathcal{F}_{S \wedge T}\right]

Hint: Let Yt=E[X∣Ft]Y_{t}=\mathbb {E}\left[X \mid \mathcal{F}_{t}\right] and Zt=Yt∧SZ_{t}=Y_{t \wedge S}. Show the left-hand side is equal to YS∧TY_{S \wedge T}.

?
Problem 3.11

A martingale or submartingale MtM_{t} is uniformly integrable if the family {Mt:t≥0}\left\{ M_{t}: t \geq 0\right\} is a uniformly integrable family of random variables. Show that if MtM_{t} is a uniformly integrable martingale with paths that are right continuous with left limits, then {MT;T\left\{ M_{T} ; T\right. a finite stopping time }\} is a uniformly integrable family of random variables. Show this also holds if MtM_{t} is a non-negative submartingale with paths that are right continuous with left limits.

?
Problem 3.12

This exercise weakens the conditions on the optional stopping theorem. Show that if MtM_{t} is a uniformly integrable martingale that is right continuous with left limits and TT is a finite stopping time, then E[MT]=E[M0]\mathbb {E}\left[M_{T}\right]=\mathbb {E}\left[M_{0}\right].

?
Problem 3.13

Let WW be a Brownian motion and let TT be a stopping time with E[T]<∞\mathbb {E}\left[T\right]<\infty. Prove that E[WT]=0\mathbb {E}\left[W_{T}\right]=0 and E[WT2]=E[T]\mathbb {E}\left[W_{T}^{2}\right]=\mathbb {E}\left[T\right]. This is not an easy application of the optional stopping theorem because we do not know that Wt∧TW_{t \wedge T} is necessarily a uniformly integrable martingale.

?
Problem 3.14

Suppose that (Wt1,…,Wtd)\left(W_{t}^{1}, \ldots , W_{t}^{d}\right) is a dd-dimensional Brownian motion. Show that if i≠ji \neq j, then WtiWtjW_{t}^{i} W_{t}^{j} is a martingale.

?
Problem 3.15

Let WtW_{t} be a Brownian motion, b>0b>0, and T=inf⁡{t>0:Wt=b}T=\inf \left\{ t>0: W_{t}=b\right\}. Show T<∞T<\infty, a.s. Show E[T]=∞\mathbb {E}\left[T\right]=\infty.

Hint: Take a limit in (3.11).

?
Problem 3.16

Suppose WW is a Brownian motion and b>0b>0. If S=inf⁡{t>0:Wt=b}S=\inf \left\{ t>0: W_{t}=b\right\}, show that the Laplace transform of the density of SS is given by

E[e−λS]=e−2λb \mathbb {E}\left[e^{-\lambda S}\right]=e^{-\sqrt{2 \lambda } b}
?
Problem 3.17

Let WtW_{t} be a Brownian motion. Show that if α>1/2\alpha >1 / 2, then

lim⁡t→∞Wttα=0, a.s.  \lim _{t \rightarrow \infty } \frac{W_{t}}{t^{\alpha }}=0, \quad \text{ a.s. }

Hint: Let α0∈(1/2,α)\alpha_{0} \in (1 / 2, \alpha ), estimate

P(sup⁡2n≤s≤2n+1∣Ws∣≥(2n)α0) \mathbb {P}\left(\sup _{2^{n} \leq s \leq 2^{n+1}}\left|W_{s}\right| \geq \left(2^{n}\right)^{\alpha _{0}}\right)

using (3.9), and then use the Borel-Cantelli lemma.

?
Problem 3.18

Let WtW_{t} be a one-dimensional Brownian motion and α∈(0,1/2]\alpha \in (0,1 / 2]. Prove that

lim sup⁡t→∞∣Wt∣tα>0, a.s.  \limsup _{t \rightarrow \infty } \frac{\left|W_{t}\right|}{t^{\alpha }}>0, \quad \text{ a.s. }
?
Problem 3.19

If WW is a Brownian motion and bb is a constant, then the process Xt=Wt+btX_{t}=W_{t}+b t is a Brownian motion with drift. Prove that if b>0b>0, then

lim⁡t→∞Xt=∞, a.s.  \lim _{t \rightarrow \infty } X_{t}=\infty , \quad \text{ a.s. }
