Problem 19.1

Suppose (Xt,P[x])\left(X_{t}, \mathbb {P}[x]\right) is a Brownian motion and St=sup⁡s≤tXsS_{t}=\sup_{s \leq t} X_{s}. Show that ((Xt,St),P[x])\left(\left(X_{t}, S_{t}\right), \mathbb {P}[x]\right) is a Markov process and determine the transition probabilities.

Problem 19.2

Suppose (Xt,P[x])\left(X_{t}, \mathbb {P}[x]\right) is a Brownian motion, ff a non-negative, bounded, Borel measurable function, and At=∫0tf(Xs)dsA_{t}=\int_{0}^{t} f\left(X_{s}\right) d s. Show that ((Xt,At),P[x])\left(\left(X_{t}, A_{t}\right), \mathbb {P}[x]\right) is a Markov process.

Problem 19.3

Suppose PtP_{t} is a Poisson process with parameter λ\lambda. Let Ω′\Omega^{\prime } be the collection of functions on [0,∞)[0, \infty ) which are right continuous and which have left limits, let F\mathcal{F} be the σ\sigma-field on Ω′\Omega^{\prime } generated by the cylindrical subsets of Ω′\Omega^{\prime }, let Ptx=x+PtP_{t}^{x}=x+P_{t}, and let P[x]\mathbb {P}[x] be the law of x+Px+P. Show that (Xt,P[x])\left(X_{t}, \mathbb {P}[x]\right) is a Markov process and determine the transition probabilities.

Problem 19.4

Suppose mm is a measure on the Borel subsets B\mathcal{B} of a metric space S\mathcal{S}. Suppose for each t>0t>0 there exist jointly measurable non-negative functions pt:S×S→Rp_{t}: \mathcal{S} \times \mathcal{S} \rightarrow \mathbb {R} such that ∫pt(x,y) m(dy)=1\int p_{t}(x, y) \, m(d y)=1 for each xx and tt and define

Pt(x,A)=∫Apt(x,y) m(dy). P_{t}(x, A)=\int _{A} p_{t}(x, y) \, m(d y) .

Show that the kernels PtP_{t} satisfy the Chapman-Kolmogorov equations if and only if

∫ps(x,y)pt(y,z) m(dy)=ps+t(x,z) \int p_{s}(x, y) p_{t}(y, z) \, m(d y)=p_{s+t}(x, z)

for every s,t≥0s, t \geq 0, every x∈Sx \in \mathcal{S}, and mm-almost every zz.

Problem 19.5

The Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process YY started at xx is a continuous Gaussian process with E[Yt]=e−t/2x\mathbb {E}\left[Y_{t}\right]=e^{-t / 2} x and covariance

Cov⁡[Ys,Yt]=e−(s+t)/2(es∧t−1). \operatorname {Cov}\left[ Y_{s}, Y_{t} \right]=e^{-(s+t) / 2}\left(e^{s \wedge t}-1\right) .

If XX is the canonical process and P[x]\mathbb {P}[x] is the law of an Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process started at xx, show that (Xt,P[x])\left(X_{t}, \mathbb {P}[x]\right) is a Markov process and determine the transition probabilities.
