Problem 17.1

Suppose a(t)a(t) is a deterministic right-continuous nondecreasing function of tt with a(0)=0a(0)=0. Prove the following formulas:

a(t)2=∫0t[(a(t)−a(s))+(a(t)−a(s−))]da(s)a(t)2=∫0t(2a(s−)+Δa(s))da(s)=2∫0ta(s−)da(s)+∑s(Δa(s))2 \begin{align} a(t)^{2} & =\int _{0}^{t}[(a(t)-a(s))+(a(t)-a(s-))] d a(s) \tag {17.14}\\ a(t)^{2} & =\int _{0}^{t}(2 a(s-)+\Delta a(s)) d a(s) \notag \\ & =2 \int _{0}^{t} a(s-) d a(s)+\sum _{s}(\Delta a(s))^{2} \tag {17.15} \end{align}

Hint: First do the case where aa has only finitely many discontinuities.

?
Problem 17.2

If AtA_{t} is an increasing process and A~t\widetilde{A}_{t} is its compensator, show that A~\widetilde{A} jumps only when AA does.

?
Problem 17.3

Let Ptj,j∈ZP_{t}^{j}, j \in \mathbb {Z}, be independent Poisson processes with parameter λj\lambda_{j}. Suppose λj=λ−j\lambda_{j}=\lambda_{-j} for each j≠0j \neq 0. Suppose λj\lambda_{j} decreases as jj increases for j≥1j \geq 1. Let

Xt=∑j∈ZPtj X_{t}=\sum _{j \in \mathbb {Z}} P_{t}^{j}

Determine reasonable conditions on the sequence λj\lambda_{j} so that XX is a semimartingale. A local martingale. A martingale. A locally square integrable martingale.

?
Problem 17.4

Show that if f(t)f(t) is a purely discontinuous function, then ef(t)e^{f(t)} is also.

?
Problem 17.5

Suppose MM is a non-negative right-continuous martingale and T=inf⁡{t>0:Mt=0}T=\inf \left\{ t>0: M_{t}=0\right\}. Show that Mt=0M_{t}=0 on (t>T)(t>T).

?
Problem 17.6

Suppose P\mathbb {P} and Q\mathbb {Q} are two equivalent probability measures, M∞M_{\infty } is the Radon-Nikodym derivative of Q\mathbb {Q} with respect to P\mathbb {P}, and Mt=E[M∞∣Ft]M_{t}=\mathbb {E}\left[M_{\infty } \mid \mathcal{F}_{t}\right]. Show that YtY_{t} is a local martingale with respect to Q\mathbb {Q} if and only if YtMtY_{t} M_{t} is a local martingale with respect to P\mathbb {P}.

?
Problem 17.7

Suppose XtX_{t} is an increasing process with paths that are right continuous with left limits, X0=0X_{0}=0, a.s., XX is purely discontinuous, and all jumps are of size +1 only. Suppose Xt−tX_{t}-t is a martingale. Prove that XX is a Poisson process.

Hint: Imitate the proof of Theorem 12.1. When using Itô's formula, it is important to use the fact that ΔXt\Delta X_{t} is always 0 or 1 .

?
Problem 17.8

Suppose XtX_{t} is an increasing process with paths that are right continuous with left limits, X0=0X_{0}=0, a.s., XX is purely discontinuous, and all jumps are of size +1 only. Suppose lim⁡t→∞Xt=∞\lim_{t \rightarrow \infty } X_{t}=\infty, a.s. Prove that XX is a time change of a Poisson process.

?
Problem 17.9

Suppose PtP_{t} is a Poisson process with parameter λ,{Ft}\lambda ,\left\{ \mathcal{F}_{t}\right\} is the minimal augmented filtration for PP, and Mt=Pt−λtM_{t}=P_{t}-\lambda t. Suppose YY is a F1\mathcal{F}_{1} measurable random variable with finite mean and variance. Prove that there exists a predictable process HH such that

Y=E[Y]+∫01HsdMs Y=\mathbb {E}\left[Y\right]+\int _{0}^{1} H_{s} d M_{s}
?
Problem 17.10

Let P1P_{1} and P2P^{2} be two independent Poisson processes with the same parameter. Let Xt=Pt1−Pt2X_{t}=P_{t}^{1}-P_{t}^{2} and let {Ft}\left\{ \mathcal{F}_{t}\right\} be the minimal augmented filtration for XX. Find a bounded mean zero random variable YY that is F1\mathcal{F}_{1} measurable which does not satisfy

Y=∫01HsdXs Y=\int _{0}^{1} H_{s} d X_{s}

for any predictable process HH.
