Problem 9.42

Let HH be a Hilbert space. Prove that the set of operators for which there exists

?
(a)

a bounded right inverse operator;

(b)

a bounded left inverse operator, is everywhere dense in B(H)\mathcal{B}(H).

Problem 9.43

Find the distance from the operator A∈B(L2[0,1])A \in \mathcal{B}\left(L_{2}[0,1]\right) to the set of non-invertible operators, if

?
(a)

(Ax)(t)=a(t)x(t)(A x)(t) = a(t) x(t), where a∈L∞[0,1]a \in L_{\infty }[0,1];

(b)

(Ax)(t)=x(1−t)(A x)(t) = x(1-t);

(c)

(Ax)(t)=x(t)−12∫01x(s)ds(A x)(t) = x(t)-\frac{1}{2} \int_{0}^{1} x(s) d s.

Problem 9.44

Let XX be a normed space, A∈B(X)A \in \mathcal{B}(X), and suppose for some complex λ1,λ2,…,λn\lambda_{1}, \lambda_{2}, \ldots , \lambda_{n} we have I+λ1A+λ2A2+……+λnAn=0I+\lambda_{1} A+\lambda_{2} A^{2}+\ldots \ldots +\lambda_{n} A^{n} = 0. Prove that AA is invertible.

?
Problem 9.45

Let XX be a Banach space, A,B∈B(X)A, B \in \mathcal{B}(X) and let the operator I+ABI+A B be invertible. Prove that the operator I+BAI+B A is also invertible.

?
Problem 9.46

?
Problem 9.47

Let XX be a normed space, A∈IB(X),B∈B(X)A \in \mathcal{IB}(X), B \in \mathcal{B}(X) and AB=BAA B = B A. Prove that A−1B=BA−1A^{-1} B = B A^{-1}.

?
Problem 9.48

Let XX be a normed space, A∈IB(X)A \in \mathcal{I B}(X). Define k:=∥A∥⋅∥A−1∥k: = \left\| A\right\| \cdot \left\| A^{-1}\right\| — the condition number of the operator AA. Suppose that, when solving the equation Ax=yA x = y (here yy is given and xx is to be found), an approximate solution x~\tilde{x} has been found, for which Ax~=y~A \tilde{x} = \tilde{y}. Prove the estimate for the relative error

1k∥y~−y∥∥y∥⩽∥x−x~∥∥x∥⩽k∥y~−y∥∥y∥. \frac{1}{k} \frac{\left\| \tilde{y}-y\right\| }{\left\| y\right\| } \leqslant \frac{\left\| x-\tilde{x}\right\| }{\left\| x\right\| } \leqslant k \frac{\left\| \tilde{y}-y\right\| }{\left\| y\right\| }.

It follows from problem 9.1 that invertibility of the operator AA implies the estimate inf⁡∥x∥=1∥Ax∥>0\inf_{\left\| x\right\| = 1}\left\| A x\right\| > 0. The converse statement is in general false: one must additionally require surjectivity of the operator AA.

Prove that the operator AA is also invertible and A−1=πX−1((A′)−1)′πYA^{-1} = \pi_{X}^{-1}\left(\left(A^{\prime }\right)^{-1}\right)^{\prime } \pi_{Y}, where πX:X↪X∗∗,πY:Y↪Y∗∗\pi_{X}: X \hookrightarrow X^{* *}, \pi_{Y}: Y \hookrightarrow Y^{* *} are the canonical embeddings.
