Metrizability of weak topologies on bounded sets
[15/20%]Let be a normed space, with separable. Prove that the weak topology in the unit ball of the space is metrizable.
Let be a separable normed space. Prove that the *-weak topology in the unit ball of the space is metrizable.
Let be a normed space, and separable (hence, by the assertion of problem 5.42, the space itself is separable). Prove that weak convergence on the unit ball of the space is metrizable.
Let be a normed space, and separable. Specify a metric , defined on all of , such that a sequence converges weakly to if and only if two conditions hold:

Let be a separable normed space. Prove that weak-* convergence on the unit ball of the space is metrizable.
Let be a separable normed space. Specify a metric , defined on all of , such that a sequence -weak converges to if and only if two conditions hold:

Let and be Banach spaces, let the spaces and (and hence also the space ) be separable, and let be reflexive. Prove that weak operator convergence on any bounded set of the space is metrizable (compare with problems 7.31 and 7.46).
Let and for in define
Show that is a metric on that defines the weak-star topology on but not on .
If is a Banach space and is separable, show that

Is the weak topology of the unit ball in a separable Hilbert space metrizable?
If the weak topology of the unit ball in a Hilbert space is metrizable, must be separable?
Find an example of a bounded subset of a normed linear space a set of functionals in containing as a dense subset of (dense in the sense of the norm topology on ) such that and generate different weak topologies for , but the same weak topology for .
Complete the last step of the proof of Theorem 10 by showing that the inequalities (11) imply that the metric induces the -weak topology.
Theorem 10: Let be a normed linear space and a separable subspace of that separates points in . Then the -weak topology on the closed unit ball of is metrizable. The proof constructs a countable dense subset of (where is the closed unit ball of ) and defines the metric
for which, for each natural number ,
Suppose is a Fréchet space (or, more generally, a metrizable locally convex space). Prove the following statements:
is the union of countably many weak*-compact sets .
If is separable, each is metrizable. The weak*-topology of is therefore separable, and some countable subset of separates points on . (Compare with Exercise 15).
If is a weakly compact subset of and if is a weak limit point of some countable set , then there is a sequence in which converges weakly to .Hint: Let be the smallest closed subspace of that contains . Apply (b) to to conclude that the weak topology of is metrizable.
Remark: The point of (c) is the existence of convergent subsequences rather than subnets. Note that there exist compact Hausdorff spaces in which no sequence of distinct points converges. For an example, see Exercise 18, Chapter 11.
