Suppose that AA and BB are compact subspaces of spaces XX and YY respectively, and that NN is an open neighborhood of

A×B⊂X×Y. A \times B \subset X \times Y.

Prove that there are open sets U⊂XU \subset X and V⊂YV \subset Y such that

A×B⊂U×V⊂N. A \times B \subset U \times V \subset N.
?

Let f:X→Yf : X \to Y be a continuous function from a space XX to a Hausdorff space YY. Let CC be a closed subspace of YY, and let UU be an open neighborhood of f−1(C)f^{-1}(C) in XX.

?
(a)

Prove that if XX is compact then there is an open neighborhood VV of CC in YY such that f−1(V)⊂Uf^{-1}(V) \subset U.

(b)

Give a counterexample to show that if XX is not compact, then there need not be such a neighborhood VV.

Let XX and YY be topological spaces, with YY compact. Let p:X×Y→Xp : X \times Y \to X be the usual projection onto the first factor. Show that pp is a closed map.
